Because the Big Man himself is taking up residence in the Square too. While the grownups are shopping, the little ones can visit Santa in his own specially built home almost up to Christmas Eve. And to keep you entertained, local performers with an ethnic focus will grace the Cultural Showcase Stage on weekends. So, bring the entire family to the Square to all the festivities and fun of Pittsburgh first Holiday Market.

With winter coming on fast, the beat goes on and on indoors around the Square, hitting high notes in a diverse variety of musical genres from New Orleans accented tunes at NOLA to the South of the Border infused sounds of Las Velas.

One of the first night spots to host live music in the Square, NOLA on the Square gets in the swing of things Wednesday through Saturday with a spicy gumbo of sounds and bands that mix a little bit of jazz, a dash of blues and even a splash of rock from local talents such as the Boilermaker Jazz Band and John Gresh's Gris-Gris.

The result is a blend of music as unique as the food on the menu at this slice of the Big Easy in the ’Burg. So if you're in the mood for a little Crescent City Stomp, NOLA is a must-stop destination.
For a more Continental style, Perle' offers a French-Mediterranean atmosphere in this chic spot perched above the Square in what used to be the The Attic, the musical home of Pittsburgh's own jazz man Walt Harper. This cosmopolitan lounge rises above it all with an urbane vibe set by some of the city's hottest and most creative DJs. Unwind in style at the Champagne bar and order some small bites from the extensive tapas menu as Perle' lives up to its name as a pearl of a place.
For music that's mucho caliente, Mariachi is the specialty of the house at Las Velas on select Saturday evenings. This lively style of Mexican folk music is a perfect side dish to Las Velas' home-style nacho chips, guacamole and entrees handed down to chef David Montanez from his mom and grandmother. And to enhance the entertainment, order a tasty, hand-mixed margarita at the bar while you enjoy the view of the bustling nightlife in the Square.
And while it's not "technically" within the boundaries, we're willing to think outside the Square to recommend the classic jazz at Andy's Wine Bar in the Fairmont Hotel. Most nights you can chill to the cool sounds of area talents such as Max Leake and Maureen Budway while you sip some of the finest designer cocktails in town.
Sure, we generally flock to Market Square as the city's hub of music, food and other fun. But the hot spot we like to think of as the pulse of Downtown is also a great place to keep your heart beating strong — especially since the coming of Old Many Winter will force many us to get physical indoor for the next few months. Whether you're looking for a traditional workout, a new age wellness approach or just a bit of well-deserved pampering, it's time to make tracks to the Square —your one-stop fitness and well-being destination.
Well, we may have closed the book on another season of the Carnegie Library's Tuesday Reading Room program in Market Square this week, but there's still plenty of events happening in our favorite Square. The Market Square Farmers Market still has the freshest produce Downtown every Thursday starting at 10:00 a.m., as well as hot new music acts playing from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. through November 8. The autumn harvest brings a bumper crop of beets, apples, potatoes and other farm fresh ingredients that are perfect for comfort food recipes as the cooler temperatures take hold. Enjoy a selection of delicious prepared foods this Thursday, along with a free concert by one of the most popular local rock, blues and jazz cover bands, Valentino & the Avengers.
Speaking of style, the city celebrates Hispanic Heritage month with a hot, hot, hot party in the Square on Friday from noon-8 p.m. Sponsored by the mayor's office and city councilman Daniel Lavelle, who represents Downtown's residents and businesses. The Fair in Market Square celebrates Latino culture, music and cuisine with performance by local musicians and artists, amazing food from area Hispanic restaurants and goods from the city's growing number of Hispanic merchants. Among the performers are Jorge Delgado and Melissa Alliston, Aqui Tango, the Guaracha Latin Dance Band and Machete Kisumontao. Authentic Mexican cuisine will be served by Silvi's of the South Side, and the Ujamaa Collective, Latino Family Center and Rite Aid will be on hand to provide health-related advice. Free and open to the public, the Fair in Market Square is part of the city's week-long schedule of activities honoring our Hispanic neighbors and their contributions to the region.Market Squarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13865195154432187007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7456584708575314916.post-57471102440958748672012-09-28T11:03:00.001-04:002012-09-28T11:28:03.409-04:00Squared DealsAround here, we're always ready for a good contest. Especially when it involves a match up against our friendly rivals in Cleveland. Which is why Mayor Luke Ravenstahl stepped up to the podium in Market Square at lunchtime on Tuesday to accept a unique challenge. Here's the wager - Pittsburgh will buy more pink ribbon bagels from local Panera Bread stores than our counterparts in Cleveland. And it's all for an important cause, as it raises awareness about the all too real risk of younger women getting breast cancer.
With former Steelers nose tackle Chris Hoke at his side, Mayor Ravenstahl dared the city by the lake to out buy and out eat the City of Champions — all in good humor and good taste, of course. Though the bet is light-hearted, the results are down-to-earth serious - the triumphant city will earn an extra $10,000 in donations from Panera. This money will help more young women understand, assess and combat the risks of breast cancer. The contest runs from October 1st-31st, in support of the Young Women's Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. In the long run, no matter which city comes out on top, everyone is a winner as Panera goes pink. And that's a call not even an NFL replacement ref can botch.
Yes, it's true - every day, youngsters in and around the Pittsburgh area go to bed with empty stomachs and wake up without enough to eat. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank along with One Young World's Wake Up Call USA Group, are teaming up to help feed local kids for the "Skip Your Lunch, Feed A Child" campaign. You can do your part by stopping by the lobby of 2 PPG Place to donate your "lunch money" which will provide healthy, nutritious food to hungry children in our community.
fighting hunger among local kids. Now, you really don't have to skip lunch, but every $10 in donations will help put food on the table, or in lunch bags, for at least 20 hungry kids throughout Western Pennsylvania. Across the country, one in six children live in homes where adults have a hard time keeping the kitchen pantry filled. Closer to home, each month the Food Bank helps feed 40,000 kids, with possibly even three times more youngsters in need. If you do actually skip lunch, your stomach might be a little empty, but your heart will be filled with the satisfaction that somewhere in our region, a child will enjoy a good meal. If you still need to satisfy that lunchtime craving, walk over to Market Square to visit any of the quick and easy eateries. If for whatever reason you just can't get out of the office today, it's easy to make a donation online too.
Come this Friday evening, they might not be dancing in the streets, but plenty of people will be kicking up their heels in the Square to start "National Ballroom Dance Week" off on the right foot. To get everyone in the swing of things, 20 young talents from the Fairmont State University Ballroom Dance Club will entertain the T.G.I.F. crowd, starting at 6pm. After that, a "flash mob" of local ballroom dancers will fill the Square to dance the night away — and there's even more dancing if you head over to the Backstage Cabaret in Theater Square during the always hot, hot, hot Salsa Fridays.
Eleven years later, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh will muster a volunteer force of post-9/11 Navy vets and Pitt ROTC students in Market Square from 2 - 6 pm on Tuesday.
The event, one of four throughout the area, will honor the thousands of Americans who died on Sept. 11, 2001 and pay tribute to the tens of thousands of American soldiers, sailors and marines who volunteered to serve and protect their fellow citizens on battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other activities throughout the City include painting homes of military families, sprucing up a transition shelter for homeless vets, and passing out backpacks loaded with school supplies for children with parents in the military. A fitting salute, indeed, to everyone who went above and beyond the call of duty during and after the attack of 9/11.
These days we call them "The Greatest Generation." But if you ask most World War II veterans to describe themselves, most likely they'll tell you they were ordinary G.I. Joes just doing their duty in service to their country. Well, during this week's Market Square Farmers Market, from 10am - 2pm, a special fundraising committee will visit the Square to raise awareness and money for the much-anticipated and long overdue Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial on the North Shore to honor all local veterans who served in Europe, Asia and everywhere else during the war.

The urgency in completing the memorial is that WW II vets are a vanishing breed. Of the 16 million who served in the war, fewer than 1.5 million are alive today — and their average age of these heroes is fast approaching 90. But their ranks are thinning rapidly as nearly 750 former soldiers, sailors and marines die each day. The need to create a lasting testament to their bravery is more important and urgent than ever before.

While the memorial will be a solemn tribute to local WWII vets, the activities in the Square will be a festive occasion. Traveling along musical memory lane, the River City Swing Band will perform nostalgic hits of the era such as "Moonlight Serenade" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," from 12 noon - 2pm. As the band plays, two nimble-footed swing dancers from the Downtown Arthur Murray Dance School will entertain the crowd with routines that symbolized the Big Band Era. And visitors to the Square can show their true red, white and blue colors by getting a photo taken with a "living statue" similar to the figures set for the proposed memorial. So rally ’round the flag for this fitting salute the heroes of World War II.
Yes, school bells are ringing all over the area — a sure sign that lazy summer days are nearly over. As autumn approaches, you can count on the Farmers Market to fill Market Square with the freshest local produce, meats, dairy products and homemade prepared foods each Thursday from 10am - 2pm through November 8.

And while you're in the Square selecting the best of this season's crop, we're inviting you to pull up a chair and enjoy another free lunchtime concert. This week's musical offering features singer Jess Sides, who teams up with partner Roby Edwards on the saxophone, to perform under the group name: Love Addiction. We're sure you'll get hooked by this local talent who blends rock, blues and folk into a style that's all her own.
Everyone knows that Market Square is one of the City's hottest dining destinations, but the menu selection will be getting a little bigger and more diverse in the coming months. If you're a Square regular, you've notice that the space between Moe's Southwest Grill and Starbucks Coffee is undergoing a face lift. The fact is, there's a pretty big transformation going on inside too. That's because the Square's newest eatery will soon welcome visitors to enjoy authentic Italian meals at Il Pizzaiolo.

If Il Pizzaiolo sounds familiar, that's because it's been a favorite on
the Mt. Lebanon dining scene for years. As workers reconfigure the new
location's four floors into restaurant space, owner Ron Molinari
promises that his Downtown menu will feature many of their well-known
pizzas, paninis, and pastas prepared in the Neapolitan style.

After years of deciding on opening another restaurant in other parts of the City — including Downtown — Ron decided that now was the time and Market Square was the place to do it. He chalks up his decision to the overall improvements in Downtown and the restaurant revival in and around the Square. While Mt. Lebanon diners enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at Il Pizzaiolo on Washington Road, the location in Market Square will serve customers at a brisker pace during what is an already busy Downtown lunch-hour. After work, however, the Il Pizzaiolo due will get a little more mellow during happy hour and dinner with the help of an expanded choice of wines, beers, and cocktails.

Sure summer is winding down, but remember: there's always something happening in the Square. See you there! Birds of a different kind of feather will flock in Market Square this Tuesday when penguins from Pittsburgh's National Aviary drop by for the final KidsPlay session of the summer. Starting at 10am, youngsters can "Meet a Penguin" and learn more about these amazing black-and-white birds that can't fly but sure can maneuver Gold Medal Olympian Michael Phelps in the water. They can reach speeds of 15 miles per hour and hold their breath for a really long time! One of these South African natives will star in this final Tuesday of KidsPlay that teams up with the Carnegie Library Tuesday Reading Room for a special bird themed morning of entertainment and education.
Of course, penguins don't breathe fire. But another type of creature with wings certainly knows how to turn up the heat. This week, the Dreamworks' How to Train your Dragon Live Spectacular sets up at the CONSOL Energy Center for a multi-media extravaganza performance of flying mythical creatures, Viking warriors, artists and acrobats who attempt to bring more than 20 fire breathing dragons under control. As part of this week's closing ceremonies for KidsPlay, a few select youngsters will have the chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to enjoy one of the magical, all-ages performances during the show's run from Aug. 23 - 26.

Once the Aviary's penguins head for home, you might just want to stick around in the Square to watch Steel Dragon, a local martial arts and dance group, perform a lion dance at noon. This Asian infused show is a much anticipated sneak peak of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's "Year of the Dragon" gala scheduled for Sept. 15 at Heinz Hall.
You can discover how to get smart — or even smarter — in the Square on Wednesday during the second annual Education Fair presented by the Continuing Education Association of Pennsylvania. Students of all ages and backgrounds are invited to learn how they can earn certificates, degrees and diplomas of all types to increase their IQ's and improve their job status, too. Counselors will be on hand to help participants study-up on scholarships and financial aid to help them shoot straight to the head of the class. Be there from 10am - 2pm for this textbook lesson on furthering your education goals.
Finally, the Square goes to the dogs, cats and just about every other type of pet you can imagine when the Animal Rescue League of Western Shelter & Wildlife Center holds its Pet a Puppy, Cuddle a Cat event on Friday from 11am - 1pm. For just a dollar, animal lovers can spend some personal time with one of the adorable dogs or kitties that are looking for a good home. Sponsored by the Honors Program at Point Park University, this four-legged fundraiser packs plenty of animal attraction.
We don't need a crystal ball or Doppler radar to predict that this will be one great week in Market Square. Rain or shine, the weather report will be just fine as WPXI-TV chief meteorologist, Stephen Cropper, drops by the Square on Tuesday during KidsPlay, from 10 - 11:30pm. Stephen will make sure that everyone keeps better trained eyes on the skies with an interactive weather forecasting demonstration to help youngsters and adults better understand high pressure systems, low fronts, and barometer readings. The kids will hear about all of the cool — or hot — factors that enable him to figure out the weather each day and let us know if we need to bundle up, cool down or bring along an umbrella when visiting the Square. Joining Stephen, the Carnegie Science Center's Science on the Road team will park in the Square to provide everyone with even more insight behind the business of TV weather forecasts. Of course, all the regular activities — from storytelling and craft making, and even the Carnegie Library's "Reading Room" from 11am - 2pm — will be apart of the fun, too.
Mother Nature can deliver a pretty hard punch sometimes. Over the past few seasons, nearly two dozen canvas umbrellas that drape cool shade across the tables in Market Square suffered severe damage from wind, rain and other nasty weather. Just when it seemed that the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership would face a huge bill to repair the battered umbrellas, one of our staffers found an affordable solution right in the Square at La Gondola Pizzeria.
You see, a hungry office mate noticed La Gondola owner Sergio Muto scooping out his delicious pizzas from the store's oven with a wooden paddle, instead of the metal ones you see in most pizza parlors. And when our curious colleague asked about the paddle, he discovered that Sergio made it himself in his home workshop. Instead of ordering extra toppings on his slices, our clever co-worker asked Sergio if he might be able to repair the damaged wooden parts that help the umbrellas fold up and down. Of course, Sergio replied, "it's no problem."

Many of the parts were so badly damaged that he had to replace them with painstakingly hand-crafted and hand-fitted new pieces. After working 12-14 hours a day all week long at La Gondola, a mainstay in the Square since 1978, he set off to his workshop on weekends to carve, shape, glue and clamp replacement pieces of hard maple, one of the more difficult woods to work with, to the battered umbrellas.

While Sergio says the result of his hard work is "no big deal," we think it's a really huge deal that he repaired the multi-colored umbrellas that dot the Square and provide a hideaway from the sun on summer days. When he showed us a few of the repaired umbrellas, some of which also needed newly shaped arms to stretch the canvas, we couldn't tell the old from the new. In fact, he paid so much attention to detail that even the wood grain matches up to spots where the replacement pieces meet original wood. And to retain the weather-warmed patina of the wood, he mixed up his own blend of stain.

So far, Sergio's repaired twelve of the damaged umbrellas, with nine more to go. Sergio is happy to help out with a great deal, especially with all the time involved. When we asked how many hours he's put in so far, he just laughed and said, "we're not even going to talk about that!"

The next time you're enjoying a little protection from the sun in the Square, take a look up and see the handiwork and friendship of Sergio on display. And remember to stop in for a slice of pie or hoagie all topped with a smile. That's always a good deal.
Sure we can hear the dog days of summer barking around Market Square these days, with Tuesday’s KidsPlay and the Carnegie Library
Reading Room, the City's biggest Farmers Market and Lunchtime concert series on
Thursdays, and Iron City Sound Dowtown Live! every Friday. While we always enjoy watching people head to the Square to soak up some sun during lunch or to chill for a bit after work, we're putting out the call this Summer for performers to help us ring in a cool new holiday tradition in the Square this year — the first ever Peoples Gas Holiday Market.

Inspired by the centuries' old Yuletide markets of northern Europe, such as the Christkindl Market in Germany, the Peoples Gas Holiday Market will add a continental accent to the Square with upscale vendors selling decorations and gifts inspired by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and other countries that contributed so much to Pittsburgh's culture and heritage. The market opens for business on November 24, immediately following the 32nd annual My Macy's Holiday Parade, and will operate between the hours of 11am - 8pm right up to December 23. It's going to be a great way to find that extra special gift for the extra special people in your life.
And to make the Peoples Gas Holiday Market even more exciting, we're looking for local performers to add their special talents to the festivities. We think this is an extraordinary way for dancers, carolers and performers of all types and nationalities to bring some of Pittsburgh's most endearing cultural and ethnic holiday traditions, songs, dances and stories in Market Square — the heart of Downtown. Show times are scheduled for 12noon - 2pm and 5 - 7pm Sunday through Friday with additional performances held every Saturday during the Holiday Market from 11am - 8pm. So if you want to show Pittsburgh you're talent this holiday season — or know of a group or individual who does — submit a performer application before Friday, September 28, 2012.
Favorites around town for decades, this family affair has shared the stage with popular rock n' roll hall of famers, such as Van Halen! Just starting her own legacy, Danielle Barbe opens the evening with her own brand of pop-rock tunes. With prime time TV soundtrack credits already in her brag book, Danielle's working with major industry professionals, including producers who have worked on studio albums by Bon Jovi and the All-American Rejects. As always, the music starts at 5pm and rocks until 8pm.
Hey, kids, there's going to be something extra special in the mail tomorrow in Market Square during this Tuesday's KidsPlay, when Mister Rogers' favorite postman shows up with a few of his friends. Okay, in case any of the grown-ups haven't guessed yet, everyone's number one letter carrier, Mr. McFeely, will be dropping by our neighborhood tomorrow from 10-11:30 a.m.

During his visit to the Square, Mr. McFeely of Speedy Delivery fame will take his time to entertain youngsters with stories that will warm the heart with a "hand" from a few of the playful puppets from the Mr. Rogers' show. Always a treat, come enjoy Mr. McFeely as he delivers Mr. Rogers' enduring message that each and everyone of is special. And look for other fun activities during KidsPlay from creating drawings and art work to storytelling.
While the kids are enjoying the show, parents can hunt for a good read as the Carnegie Library Reading Room rolls into the Square. Loaded with plenty of books from best sellers to do it yourself manuals for sale for as little as one dollar, the Reading Room is a real page turner from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Best of all, every book sold helps fund the Library's Downtown branch on Smithfield Street.
Musically
speaking, we're putting the pedal to the metal this week for a couple
of free concerts in Market Square. Tonight, a group of talented Jersey-based boys
and girls take center stage in the Square at 5pm for an unforgettable a
cappella musical show. Belting out tunes by all-time favorites such as
Bon Jovi & Boyz II Men, the high school-aged RockNRoll Chorus
will make a stop on their 2012 National Summer tour in Downtown Pittsburgh. This
full-tilt boogie performance pushes the volume to the max without any
instruments, just vocals.
But this Wednesday, July 18, we're glad to give a free parking pass in the middle of the Square to a few classic chassis when the 2012 Vintage Grand Prix Downtown Race Car Parade and Display rolls into Downtown.

Now in its 30th year, the Vintage Grand Prix returns to its Schenley Park course on July 21-22 as one of America's biggest vintage car races and the only one run on city streets. While those daring young men — and some ladies, too — zip along to be the first to cross the finish line, everyone involved with the race is a winner. That's because proceeds from the VGP benefit the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School, which provides lifelong opportunities for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Before the big race weekend, auto lovers will get a chance to see this fleet of antique and classic cars wind through Downtown on Wednesday as the parade starts from its new location at the Rivers Casino. After crossing the Allegheny River, the automobiles will split ranks and head to four Downtown destinations, including Market Square, where they'll be on display from 10:30am - Noon. So get your motor running with a look at these retro rides that are revved up for a good cause.
Kicking off the weekend during this week's Iron City Sound Downtown Live! Friday night FREE concert in the Square is our very own "East Coast, Blue-Eyed Soul Man," Billy Price, with his unique brand of new R&B interpretations. A big hit during last year's Light Up Night<span style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; font-family: "Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt;">® festivities, Price returns to the Square to revive the rhythm and blues groove in the heart of the city. Always a crowd pleaser, Price effortlessly makes the blues feel like a good thing. Opening the show at 5pm, the soulful trio Dream Job will set the tone for a great evening of local musical talent.

So, on your mark, get set and GO down to Market Square this week for classic cars, RockNRoll stars, and blues guitars.
Actually, we're feeling kind of lucky this week because this Friday, July 13, will be one of the most eventful nights in Market Square (and the rest of Downtown) this summer! Along with the Downtown Live! free concert series, the Golden Triangle will glow all night long as thanks to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Summer Galley Crawl and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's first ever night market. So here's your guide to navigating the festivities and turning 13 into your lucky number...

Let's start off with a trip to Margaritaville via Market Square. That's where Tom Watt, or "The Buffett Man," will find a safe harbor for his Jimmy Buffett tribute act that thrills tens of thousands of Parrotheads up and down the East Coast. While Tom brings his "Buffett Man" review to the Square, you won't have to go too far to find your own cheeseburger in paradise — or any other type of divine dish — at one of the Square's many fine eateries. Even if you're not a Parrothead, you'll find many birds of a similar feather in the Square singing along to tunes that sound so much like the real thing that you'll swear there have been changes in attitudes and latitudes.
After the show, you can cruise on over to Penn and Liberty avenues for the summer Gallery Crawl — the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's quarterly art, music, film and fun extravaganza. More than 20 galleries, restaurants and other venues will open their door to expose gallery crawlers to some of the most innovative and creative artists and musicians in town. Enjoy this cultural voyage around Downtown from 5:30-9 p.m.
This nocturnal, one of a kind marketplace will combine some of the city's top restaurateurs and craftspeople in a decidedly hip, urban setting as part of our Project Pop Up: Downtown series. Well, we're here to point you in the right direction on the road to overall fitness, which of course leads to Market Square. To help you declare your physical independence this week, members of the Pittsburgh Power arena football team will hold a workout in the Square on Friday, July 6, and City Councilman Daniel Lavelle will conduct the second "Fit in Six" health and wellness fair on Saturday, July 7.

Catch an up close look at the gridiron stars of the fastest, most explosive game in town when the Pittsburgh Power leave the friendly indoor confines of the Consol Energy Center to stage an outdoor practice in the Square, this Friday from noon-1 p.m. Thanks to a portable, inflatable practice field, the team will run through its normal pre-game drills in the heart of the city. You're invited watch the Power beat the heat under the noontime sun. Along with watching this alfresco scrimmage, fans can meet the players afterwards, and a few lucky youngsters just might make the cut and join the team for a few plays. To recreate the gameday experience, Power PA announcer and 100.7 FM morning DJ "Bubba" will call the play-by-play action. Trust us, this will be "powerful" stuff.
While he's working to make the city more vital, he's also laying the groundwork for everyone in his wide-reaching district to lead healthier lives. Which is the idea behind "Fit in Six," sponsored by Gateway Health Plan, UPMC and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. Back in the Square after a successful inaugural turn last year, "Fit in Six," which runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. focuses on many of the health issues and concerns facing residents of the district, which covers much of the North Side, Downtown, the Hill District, Uptown and even parts of Oakland.
And did we mention that there will be plenty of fun stuff to do, too, like line dancing and games? Fit in Six is just part of councilman Lavelle's overall, year-round game plan to make residents in his district the most informed and healthiest citizens of Pittsburgh.
This week, the one and only Joe Grushecky will take to the stage, only with the help of the City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Pittsburgh Brewing Co. The critics' favorite from the start, Grushecky's hard-driving, blue-collar brand of rock 'n' roll has earned him fans across the country, including a Jersey boy by the name of Bruce Springsteen. Whether Joe and the Houserockers are "Pumping Iron" or crooning about a "Love So Tough," they're always true to their Steel City roots. With a stage presence big enough to fill a stadium, Grushecky's shows still perform an upclose punch of an intimate show, just like down at "Junior's Bar." The Long Time Darlings take the stage at 5 p.m. to warm up the crowd, while Joe and his boys prove that rock is still alive in the ’Burgh around 6 p.m.
You won't have to search for that lost shaker of salt when you take a musical trip to Margaritaville with Tom Watt, who turns parrotheads around with his spot-on renditions of Jimmy Buffett classics. Though he may not be the son of a son of a sailor, Tom sails through the Buffett songbook with an ease that is sure to please the real deal's truest fans. Get ready to take off with Jeff Jimerson and Airborne. A high-flying act around the ’Burgh since the ’90s, Jeff lands his band in the Square on July 27. A mainstay at Penguins games singing the National Anthem, Jeff plays power-pop tunes that will have fans dancing in the streets around the Square. Getting things started on the right note will be Bear Cub, a local band that resonates with a sound reminiscent of the Avett Brothers and Josh Ritter.
A newcomer from what she calls a "small town south of the city," Danielle's already made a big splash with songs that can be heard on major network TV shows and at the movies.
Polished pros, the band has opened for the Beach Boys, Hall and Oates and other big name performers along the East Coast. Setting the tone for the evening, opening act Guaracha will spice up the evening with a lively mix of Cuban, merengue and other island sounds.
To close out the set on August 17, country act the Stickers will turn the Square into a high-energy, upbeat rock show you wouldn't even find on CMT! These urban cowboys will have fans of all ages kicking up their heels to favorites such as "Girl in a Pickup Truck" and "She Don't Like a Thing" as these local faves bring a bit of Nashville to the Downtown Pittsburgh.
It's true - there is something new in Market Square just about every day. And if you've been looking around the Square lately, you've noticed that something's going on in the space above Bruegger's. We've decided to give you an exclusive sneak peek at what is soon to be the latest hotspot in Downtown Pittsburgh when Perlé debuts in just a few weeks.

The dreamchild of NOLA on the Square partners Yves Carreau and Pete Landis, Perlé will open its doors to a more cosmopolitan Downtown crowd looking to literally rise above it all. With its champagne bar theme and decor, Perlé brings a sophisticated atmosphere to the Square for after work, get-togethers and late-night rendezvous. With muted hues and subdued lighting, Perlé's centerpiece will be a 24-foot long bar that stretches nearly the length of the intimate but spacious interior. While workmen are currently busy transforming the blueprints into reality, Perlé will soon be a chic refuge in the heart of the city.

With a bit of a twist, Perlé will be open for public and private events on a split schedule. The doors open Wednesday through Saturday to the public. The kitchen will serve an innovative tapas menu with a continental European flavor and will stay open past midnight most evenings, with even longer hours on weekends. From Sunday through Tuesday, Perlé will be available for private functions such as weddings or business meetings. Landis says that at least one wedding is in the works and several local corporations are looking to book the space.

And please pardon our French, but Perlé (per-lay) is how they say pearl in Paris. It's also a sly French reference to the tiny bubbles that will be served at the Square's newest and chicest destination. Stay tuned for details.Market Squarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13865195154432187007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7456584708575314916.post-29104485242339675062012-06-12T14:33:00.000-04:002012-06-12T14:39:20.991-04:00Wieners Take All!

Hey, isn't it cool that the Buccos are in first place? It's always great to cheer on a winner. Well, tomorrow at noon in Market Square — that would be Wednesday, June 13 — you can root for a whole bunch of wieners, uh we mean winners, when the regional round of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest Qualifier returns to Pittsburgh at noon. Nearly as old as Major League Baseball, the Nathan's competition took its first bite out of the action in 1916, at the Original Nathan's location on New York City's very own Coney Island. And we're proud to say that our hometown is one of a few select cities chosen for qualifying rounds. That's the kind of ranking we really relish.

Now, a lot of games can have a lot of rules. But for this match up, the guidelines are simple. You gotta eat more frankfurters and buns than anyone else during 10 minutes. These big league eaters can help the dogs go down easier by dunking them in the beverage of their choice or chomp them down or bite by bite. But the only "no-no" in this wiener take all battle is that they must swallow every bite. There are no "put backs," if you know what we mean.

Judging by last year's event, the 2012 qualifier will be even more ferocious in this man bites dog battle. "Big" Brian Subich of Johnstown looms large in the men's field as a previous winner in North Carolina. But the rest of the pack will be nipping at his heels — and big piles of hot dogs — as they go for the title and a chance to win an trip to chow down at the July 4 Championship, which draws 40,000 fans to the corner of Stillwell and Surf avenues, just a couple blocks away from Coney Island's famous Cyclone roller coaster. Along with a broadcast on ESPN that's viewed by almost two million fans, the men's and women's eating champs will pocket a cash prize big enough to keep them up to their necks in Nathan's dogs.

For the first time in Pittsburgh, a husband and wife will compete on the same stage when Theresa Subich sets her sight on the women's crown. And just what does it take to be the champ? Well, it's a combination of a big appetite for Nathan's hot dogs, a cast-iron stomach and a determination to win. Last year's winners of the fast-and-furious franks fest in the Square each downed 28 dogs in 10 minutes. To put that into perspective, world champion eater Joe Chestnut consumed 68 Nathan's Famous dogs in the same amount of time — a record that actually might be hard to swallow for mere mortals.

Even though it's too late to compete in this year's event, it's never to late to begin training for the 2013 competition. You can start getting in shape, sort of, by visiting the Downtown Nathan's at the corner of Wood Street and Third Avenue. After all, everyone loves a wiener.
After all, with such a rich and majestic history more than 250 years long, you can bet there are more than a few dispirited souls from the netherworld roaming the city's streets, buildings and imaginations. While we're pretty sure that Market Square remains specter-free, aside from the annual ZombieFest, Tim Murray and his crew of ghost hunters will track down a phantom or two on weekly tours of Haunted Pittsburgh that start in the center of the Square.
And once he began researching local ghost stories, he discovered that Pittsburgh was blessed — or should we say cursed — with a treasure trove of such eerie tales. Many of those yarns from the dark side trace their shadowy origins to some of Downtown's most famous landmarks, including one prestigious hotel where the ghosts can check in anytime they like but they can never leave.
Despite suffering two gunshot wounds to the neck and a stab in the thigh, the industrialist managed to wrestle his would be assassin into submission. Years later the man of steel credited the miraculous appearance of a departed young daughter whose brilliant aura blinded the would be assassin. You could say the guy never had a "Frick"ing chance.
Broken hearts often turn into lost souls. When Kate Soffel fell head over heels for Ed Biddle, she should have known better. After all, she was the wife of the County Jail warden and Biddle was a notorious area criminal awaiting the executioner on death row. Still, Mrs. Soffel aided Biddle's ill-fated escape from H.H. Richardson's landmark structure. Not long after the jail break, Biddle was shot to death, and his star-crossed lover spent the rest of her life in prison. Rumor has it that the wailing ghost of Mrs. Soffel still roams the former jail's corridor. If you stand under the Bridge of Sighs on Grant Street, you might just hear her spine-chilling moans.
And there are even more things that go bump in the night, such as the curse of the Wabash Railroad Bridge, the dead judge who dons his robes to deliver verdicts from beyond the grave, the former brothel turned restaurant, PaPa J's Centro, where the ghouls are "boo-tiful" and otherworldly legends of a totally honest president who logged a night's rest at the western end of Smithfield Street.
While many of the stories will make the hairs nearly jump off the back of your neck, there's plenty to learn along the way about Pittsburgh's history and role in literally building an America that became a world power. Still, bizarre is the theme of these weekly, 90-minute spook search tours, which start in the Square each Saturday at 7 p.m. for the next few weeks before switching to Fridays on July 7. It's such a shock to the system that you just might want to return to the Square to sit down with some friendly "spirits" to calm your rattled nerves.
Now, we know that most people think of Market Square as a grown-up type of place, but starting this Tuesday morning, youngsters rule in the Square when KidsPlay! launches a summer load of fun activities geared towards children and families. Whether it's story time or craft making — or even catching a sneak peek inside the Pittsburgh Police bomb squad truck — tots, tykes and even tweens will find something to like during KidsPlay!, which runs from June 5- August 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. And did we mention free snacks like ice cream and chips?

So you know -- moms & dads, granddads & grandmas, and even aunts & uncles are invited to join the kids in their family down to the Square next Tuesday to take part in a ton of activities. Best of all, a special guest from Downtown's very own Toonseum will be on hand to entertain. That's right, master cartoonist and storyteller — not to mention Toonseum's executive director —Joe Wos will delight kids and adults with his quick wit and even quicker drawing hand as he creates cartoon drawings on the spot for a few lucky youngsters to take home with them.

During June, kids also will get a chance to meet real-life heroes such as city firefighters and police officers, learn how trees make the world a healthier place and get an inside look at why everyone needs to learn about the arts. Later in the summer, KidsPlay will bring back one of the Square's all-time favorite visitors —"That Guy With the Birds." With his band of fine feathered friends — all parrots rescued from not so great situations — John Lege's pampered pets dunk a basketball, play ring toss and perform other tricks that will amuse all. When John and his birds are around the Square, it's always time to fly!

While the kids are having a good time, the grownups might take a short stroll to the Carnegie Library Reading Room, which also rolls into the Square every Tuesday morning from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. through October 9. Adults and kids will find plenty of good reads on the Carnegie's roving library carts that are filled with everything from best sellers to do it yourself manuals of all types. Plus, you can't beat the prices either, with hard covers selling for $2 and paperbacks going for just a buck! Best of all, every book you buy supports the library's Downtown branch.

So make it a family affair in the Square every Tuesday morning with KidsPlay and the Carnegie Library Reading Room.
Market Squarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13865195154432187007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7456584708575314916.post-55089800553622998852012-05-22T09:30:00.000-04:002012-05-22T09:30:31.113-04:00Bluebird on the Wing

Let's just say that a little birdie chirped the news to us about the Bluebird Kitchen. Now we'll tell you that the Bluebird Kitchen is on 221 Forbes Avenue. But the easiest way to find the Bluebird Kitchen is to look up for its sign — a welcoming circular fixture with a tiny bluebird on a nest of woven twigs in the center.

Open for just two weeks, the Bluebird Kitchen is the creation of Mt. Lebanon native Liz Moore. After 11 years of living in New York City — where she worked for a "monster" of an IT company— Liz returned to Pittsburgh to live out her dream of owning a small cafe and bakery. After looking at spaces in other parts of the city, Liz landed the Bluebird Kitchen near the Square — a decision based on Market Square's renovation and new office and hotel building construction nearby.

Thanks to windows that stretch nearly from floor to ceiling, natural light brightens the butcher block counters that offer a perfect perch to view the workday world rushing by. And when you open the door at the Bluebird Kitchen, chances are that Liz will greet you with a smile and take your order at the register. Once you say hello, it's time to check out the menu on the four giant chalkboards behind the counter, which lists breakfast items from fried egg sandwiches topped with cheddar and Gruyere cheese, with a side of house-made sausage, to organic steel cut oats. Of course, you can window shop the baked goods and decide on a muffin or doughnuts fried on the premises.

Liz promises a core lunch menu of tasty treats such as the "croque monsieur" sandwich, a French twist on the classic ham and cheese, plus an ever-changing selection of daily specials. While she handles the "front of the house," a creative young staff is busy in the kitchen. Whether it's a nutter butter cookie or the ciabatta bread on your roast beef sandwich, the Bluebird staff prepares everything in house from scratch. Even the meats served are cured and cooked in house. Running the show in the kitchen, executive chef Steven Thompson — who honed his skills at Downtown's Nine on Nine and Oakland's Lucca — stays busy whipping up new culinary surprises that are sure to delight. Open Mondays-Friday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m., the Bluebird Kitchen (412-465-0330) is one winged thing that will always be welcome in the Square.

From bluebirds to "hogs," the Square will be roaring with Harleys and other motorcycles roll into the Square Thursday evening for the first "Iron City Bike Night." If you were born to be wild, you can get your motor running every Thursday starting at 6 p.m. through August 30 as the Market Square Merchants Association welcomes easy riders of all stripes to enjoy free music by local bands— along with food and beverage specials — all summer long.
Summer's still more than a month away according to the calendar. But the activity meter is heating up as four of the most popular attractions return to the new town square of Downtown this week. What's in store for Market Square during the warm weather months is a lineup of farm fresh foods, good books at bargain prices and free music throughout the work week. In other words, the Farmers Market rolls into town this Thursday, the Carnegie Library Reading Room opens a new chapter starting Tuesday and the Mellow Monday and Thursday Noontime concerts strike just the right chord.
By now, everyone knows that the Farmers Market plants its roots deep in the Square every Thursday during the spring, summer and fall. Now in its eighth season, the Farmers Market is a perennial favorite with Downtown residents, workers, shoppers and just about anyone else who happens to stroll through the Square on Thursdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Along with a bumper crop of returning favorites, the Farmers Market will expand from nearly a dozen vendors to 25 sellers of fruits, vegetables, organic meats, pastries, prepared foods, vegetarian pet treats, fresh-cut flowers, beeswax candles, Angora goat yarn and so much more that you'll want to visit every week just so you don't miss anything.
While you're picking a peck of perfect peppers or savoring a flaky Greek pastry, you can tap your toes to the sweet sounds of some of the City's best musicians during a free lunchtime concert that fills the Square each Thursday from Noon-2 p.m. with the blues, soul, bluegrass, rock and more from local talents such as Joy Ike, The Whiskey Holler and this week's first act, Maddie Georgi, an amazing balladeer who has belted out the National Anthem at Pirates and Steelers games. From tunes with a heavy back-beat to songs with an upbeat tempo, the Thursday Noontime Concerts will keep your toes tapping all summer long.
If you're looking for a real page turner, the Carnegie Library Reading Room continues a novel approach to reaching out to Market Square visitors who have an appetite for a good book during lunchtime. Back for a third season, the Reading Room welcomes readers of all ages to browse its ever-changing collection of fiction and non-fiction best-selling titles as well as books on topics ranging from gourmet cooking to automotive repairs. And you don't need a library card for this mobile branch of the Carnegie Library since all the books are for sale at the bargain prices of $2 per hardback and a buck for each paperback. While you'll be expanding your home library and base of knowledge, the proceeds will benefit the Downtown Carnegie location on Smithfield Street.

On the second Tuesday of each month, a staff librarian will be on hand to lead book discussions and help buyers select titles. For those caught up in the worldwide web, every third Tuesday will feature an update on what's new in technology at the Library. And throughout the season, which runs from this Tuesday through October 9, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., popular programs such as "30 Books in 30 Minutes," salon sessions and cookbook celebrations — complete with a cooking demonstration from a local chef — will be featured. But we have to warn you, the early bookworms at the Reading Room really get the best reads.
Okay, now let's get this party started right with the Mellow Monday concerts. Sponsored by the Market Square Merchants Association, this soothing acoustic music series helps take a bit of the manic out your Monday, starting today, with some smooth sounds from the likes of Brad Yoder, Maddie Arnold and this week's headliner, Nina Sainato. We like to think of the series, which runs every Monday from Noon-1 p.m. through October 29, as the perfect side dish to the fabulous lunchtime meals served by the great restaurants in and around the Square.
