Another Square Deal Downtown

Hey, it really is hip to be square around these parts these days. After all, Market Square is one of the hottest new dining and nightlife destination spots in Downtown. And in just a few months, we'll welcome back warmer weather with an exciting new schedule of al fresco events in the Square, including the Farmers Market, noontime concerts and the Carnegie Library Reading Room.

But right now Market Square's sister square —Mellon Square — is getting a major overhaul that promises to make this mid-city oasis greener and better than ever thanks to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the City of Pittsburgh and many generous individuals and organizations who are supporting the project.

With the PPC guiding the project, the Mellon Square makeover will cover a lot of ground. In fact, just about every square inch of our sister square will receive some extra special TLC over the next months. In fact, works crews have been on the job since the dog days of last summer, cleaning and repairing the stairways from Smithfield Street, waterproofing the terraces that over hang the shops below and enjoying a great bird's-eye view of some exciting chase scenes from this summer's sure-bet big-screen blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises."

While Market Square's been part of the Pittsburgh scene since the city's earliest pioneer days, Mellon Square is a more recent chip off the old ’Burgh block. When it opened in 1955, Mellon Square was a crowning jewel of the city's famed first Renaissance, which helped Pittsburgh blow away its "Smokey City" image. Replacing a crowded block of shops and surface parking lots, Mellon Square earned a place in urban planning as the first green space built on top of an underground parking garage. Since then, generations of Pittsburghers over the past half-century have flocked to the park for a moment of solitude during the day or to relax with co-workers during lunch.

When the job's done, Mellon Square will more closely bring to life the original vision for the space. Though part of the initial blueprints, a terrace over the street-level shops never made the final cut. But nearly 60 years later, the former giant planter will welcome visitors to a rectangular refuge from the streets below with grassy areas, benches and handicapped access. The falling waters of the Cascade Fountain will be turned on again and the park's center fountain and pool will shoot spouts of water high in the sky. New trees have already taken root in repaired planter boxes. And while the completed project will most certainly please the eyes of all beholders, some of the most incredible work is below the surface as workers have installed new drainage and irrigation systems, insulation, electrical wiring and waterproofing.

So don't forget to take a few steps toward Mellon Square when you're out on the town. You'll enjoy an amazing work in progress.

From the Grammys to the Oscars, it's awards season again. While the entertainment industry is honoring the tops of the pops and big-screen blockbusters, we're here to shine the spotlight on the 2011 Market Square Rookies of the Year and our Comeback of the Year. And the winners are...

Winghart's Burgers & Whiskey Bar

When the doors to this burger joint opened on a freezing cold day last January, the lines were already forming almost to Forbes Avenue. Tucked into the southwest corner of the Square, Winghart's serves its specialty hamburgers to everyone from local deal-making execs and degree-earning college students to tattooed hipsters and Cultural District bound families from the ’burbs. And with waitstaff servers straight from an Elmore Leonard novel or Tom Waits' song, Winghart's grilled burgers and wood-oven gourmet pizzas taste even better with a pint of microbrew beer or a shot of special-blend whiskey. NOLA on the Square

Come on and let the good times roll at NOLA, where executive chef Andrew Hebson combines the spirit of Bourbon Street with Creole-infused kitchen creations to deliver a taste of the Crescent City on the Square. To help diners better enjoy the New Orleans vibe, NOLA gets jazzy with live music at least two nights during the week and free valet parking every evening. Whether it's a pre-show cocktail at the bar or a sit-down dinner after the final curtain — or both — NOLA brings the flavors of the Big Easy to Downtown. Get in on the Mardi Gras groove at NOLA 11 a.m-11 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

DiBella's Old-Fashioned Subs

You'll almost need to pinch yourself upon entering DiBella's in the Square. The old-time look inside this brand-spanking new location is so authentic it feels as though it's been around since the first town criers shouted the daily news to early Pittsburghers who gathered around the Square. The menu features made-to-order sandwiches stacked with freshly sliced meats on baked-on-the-premises breads that are big enough to satisfy just about any size appetite. And with Downtown becoming a 24/7 destination, DiBella's is open every day from 10 a.m-9 p.m. for hungry early birds and night owls.

You don't have to be a Yinzer to love the homespun flavors and humor of Liberty Avenue's newest dining hot spot. Flavored with hints of Dino and Old Blue Eyes and just off the Square, Taste of Dahntahn keeps its glorious kitschy-retro neon sign on from dawn to dusk. During the week, TOD opens at 6:30 a.m for breakfast (and 8 a.m. on the weekends) and stays busy in the kitchen way after the sun goes down. This trip along Downtown's memory lane includes tabletops decorated with old-time photos of the city and Rat Pack Vegas-style entertainment. And don't forget the all-you-can-eat crab legs every Monday night.

Anna's La Cucina Flegrea
"That's amore" might best describe the special ingredient in the southern-Italian dishes that owner Anna Fevola creates in the kitchen of her second-floor restaurant that overlooks the Square from its lofty Graeme Street vantage point. A longtime fixture in Squirrel Hill, Anna is a welcome addition to the Square, where many of her fans are already enjoying her new home in Downtown. Come join Anna for a taste of Italia on Mondays 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturdays 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sundays 12:30-8 p.m.

Noodles & Co.

Literally the new kid on the block—for at least the next couple weeks—Noodles & Co. serves noodles, soups, salads, pastas, sandwiches, and Rice Krispie treats every day from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. with extended hours on Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m. Because there are no can openers, microwaves or freezers, every plate of mac and cheese, fried pan noodles and penne is served fresh and made-to-order.With plenty of windows and a bright open dining room, Noodles & Co. is a perfect place for a comfort food and people watching on the Square all day long.

Diamond Market Bar & Grill

We says "cheers" to the Diamond Market Bar & Grill, a cozy corner tavern and restaurant where it seems that everyone knows your name — or soon will. With a nod to the Square's history, the Diamond Market Bar & Grill's name and decor recall an era when locals flocked to the space once known as "The Diamond" for meeting, eating and greeting purposes. With a menu of gourmet Angus hamburgers, sandwiches, craft beers and classic cocktails, this is one Diamond that sparkles plenty. Stop by any day of the week from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. for a bite to eat and even later for a nightcap at the bar.

Sinobi 2 Go

Serving healthy food at happy prices is the mission of this Asian-accented eatery on Market Street. Though it sports a small counter for eating in, Sinobi 2 Go lives up to its name with a takeout menu that's heavy on Japanese and Korean sushi and vegetarian dishes— but not calories. One of the house specialties is the Korean hot dog, an All-American wiener topped with a spicy kimchi and shredded pork or chicken. Perfect for lunch or a quick bite for the ride home, Sinobi 2 Go is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Las Velas

We tip our sombreros to our amigos at Las Velas for a much-anticipated and welcome return to the Square. After a fire closed this Mexican eatery late in 2010, Las Velas reopened in 2011 with a hot, hot, hot comeback. With south of the border favorites on the revamped menu, Las Velas earns a hearty "Ole!" for its traditional burritos, smothered enchiladas and seafood. And don't forget to order fresh chips and salsa and an authentic margarita to complete this culinary road trip to Mexico. Las Velas is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-8 p.m Sunday.

And for an even bigger taste of the city's best dining, Pittsburgh Restaurant Week 2012 serves up a wide sampling of the city's top restaurants. With great choices all over town, participating Downtown restaurants include Market Square's Bella Sera Urban Trattoria, Elements just down the block on Stanwix, and Habitat located in the Fairmont Pittsburgh. You could say we've been around the block a time or two when it comes to dining in Market Square. With so many great choices, sometimes we make our meal choices by playing a culinary version of spin the bottle. But no matter what direction we end up heading, we always come up with a winner. Now —with the opening of Noodles & Co. — everyone can expand their lunch and dinner destinations in the Square to savor flavors from around the world without ever leaving the heart of Downtown.

Ever since its debut just a few day before Christmas, Noodles & Co. has been living up to its mission to serve classic dishes from around the world, right in our neighborhood. With a menu that features freshly prepared comfort food from the U.S., the Mediterranean and Asia, Noodles & Co. is your passport to noodle dishes, pasta, soups and sandwiches served just how you like them. From All-American favorites like three types of grown-up macaroni and cheese to zesty penne and spicy Japanese pan noodles, Noodles & Co. puts a special accent on every item they serve.

Located between the Oyster House and DiBella's Subs, Noodles & Co. is already building a loyal following among the Downtown lunch crowd. Most days, lines form outside even before they unlock the door at 11 a.m. Back for second trip with a friend in tow, Brian Decima discovered Noodles & Co. on one of his frequent lunchtime treks to the Square. Along with the "great service and nice atmosphere," He likes the freshness of the food, especially the plate of Pad Thai he ordered on this visit.

That fresh taste is no trick, since Noodles & Co. uses just-off-the-truck produce and meats that are delivered a couple times each week. "We don't have a freezer or can opener in any of our locations," says market training manager, Liz Camp. Even more impressive, there's a "no nukes" policy, since microwaves are taboo, too. So, if your Bangkok curry or chicken noodle soup isn't piping hot, you get a fresh serving. And for more finicky diners, the staff can customize any item on the menu. "We want everyone to be completely satisfied every time they eat here," she says.

Like we said, Noodles & Co. attracts a big lunch time crowd that dines on the premises. In most case, meals are ready in three to four minutes and delivered to your table by the efficient staff. However, if you don't have the time to wait, you can order online or through an iPhone app. "We get a lot of takeout orders from nearby offices," says Liz. "We're trying to give people as many options to enjoy Noodles & Co. as possible." You Say You Got A Resolution

The holidays are gone for another year. But we're still making lists. This time around instead of gifts, we're jotting down resolutions. Now, we've heard some people talking about training for the 2012 Pittsburgh Marathon. Others say they want to pedal from Pittsburgh to the nation's capital along the Great Allegheny Passage from the Steel City to Washington, D.C. But most of us just want to shed a few of those 7 to 10 pounds that most Americans put on during the holiday season. Which means, we're going to tell you to take a hike to Market Square to help you get 2012 started on the right — and healthy — track.

Normally, when we point you in the direction of the Square, it's to sample the great eats at any one of the 17 dining establishments that circle the Square. Don't worry, we'll get around to that. But since most of us are packing a few extra pounds, this walk to the Square will be a start trimming the fat from our waistlines and diets. And the first stop is the PNC Y. Technically, the new, LEED-certified YMCA is on Fifth Avenue, across the street from the new PNC Bank branch office. But, with its bird's eye views of the Square, we're claiming the Y as part of our turf. Inside, you can get physical in the Y's more than 44,000 square feet spread over three floors stocked with state-of-the-art weight training equipment, aerobics facilities, swimming pool, group exercise and other workout gear and programs. More than a gym, your local Y is a community. Hey employers... if you want to encourage healthy staff behaviors the YMCA has employer-based programs available. And can you think of a better way to run your way to fitness than on a treadmill that overlooks the Square?

If you're looking to pump some iron—but not the local brew—Gold's Gym on the corner of Forbes and Stanwix blends old school workouts with new era programs for an overall approach to fitness. Perched on the second floor of the Kossman building, Gold's offers cardio-powered programs to build strength and stamina as well as exercise plans that combine tai chi, yoga and pilates to increase flexibility and inner calmness.

Workouts and training programs are just fine. But we all need a daily dose of vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients to keep healthy. To stock up on vitamins from A to Z, along with high-energy snacks to fuel your most intense workouts, drop in at the GNC store just across the street from Dunkin Donuts. Yes, there are some strange bedfellows on the Square!

As we said, we still want you to eat in the Square. After all, all those eateries — old, new and still to come — are among the reasons why the Square is one of the most exciting destinations in all of Pittsburgh these days. But for the next few months, keep moderation in mind. Sure, every once in a while you can indulge in a beefy Double Mattola at Winghart's or the pasta al quattro formaggi—that's Italian for pasta with four cheeses—at La Cucina Flegrea. Just remember that there are a multitude of less calorie-intense menu options at just about every dining spot in the Square. Whether it's the ocean-fresh salmon salad at Bella Sera or an Asian-flavored bowl of Thai curry soup at the recently opened Noodles & Company, there are plenty of healthy and hearty eating options in the Square. And no matter what you eat in the Square, you can always resolve to walk it off with a few laps around the terrazzo plaza!

A Year to Remember

Okay, you have to excuse us if we want to hold on to 2011 for a little bit longer. After all, this past year marks the first full 12 months of the wonderfully transformed Market Square and it's new, inviting open piazza makeover. And what an amazing 365 days it's been. From the opening of new restaurants and businesses to another electrifying, two-day Light Up Night to open a spectacular holiday shopping season, the Square really is at the heart of Downtown's newest renaissance. So as the final moments of 2011's 525,600 minutes tick away, let's take a look at just a few of the Square's more memorable happenings of the year.

The fun kicked off early in the year when more than 1,300 Black & Gold faithful huddled in the Square for the DIGIORNO'S "Go Pittsburgh" High Five Challenge. This early February competition pitted Pittsburgh fans against their cheesehead counterparts in Green Bay in a show of support for their favorite football teams before the big game. Though the Steelers came up short on the gridiron, their fans nabbed the pep rally championship during this showdown.

Just to prove that we are plenty willing to put our stomachs where our mouths are, hundreds of red-hots lovers turned out in late June for the local finals of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. As the competition chomped through scores of dogs, a pair of wiener winners emerged to represent the region in the grand finale at New York City's Coney Island on Independence Day. Juliet Lee, our local winner got second place in the finals with 29.5 dogs, beaten only by Sonya "the Black Widow" Thomas.

Most days, business casual is the typical fashion statement in the Square. But when a bevy of local models dressed to the nines and strutted their stuff on the catwalk during Pittsburgh Fashion Week's runway romp, the Square earned the title of Style Central. As the hundreds of people who watched the tented show in the center of the Square will attest, Pittsburgh Fashion Week — in just its second year — established itself as one of the premier events on the city's social and cultural calendar.

Speaking of stylish, Design Squared opened the doors on home decor trends as interior design professionals gathered in the Square for this primer on the latest trends in kitchen, bath and overall renovation and decorating. Sponsored by local businesses—including the Square's very own SPLASH! and PPG Paints—Design Squared offered free cooking demonstrations from the chefs at NOLA and continuing education credit courses for aspiring and working design pros. Not to mention the live music and gorgeous design items that could be installed in your very own home.

Normally, the Square is a fairly lively place. But every year around Halloween thousands of the walking dead stumble into our favorite spot for a day of spine-chilling, blood-curdling fun during ZombieFest. With costumes and makeup that's just might scare to death the faint of heart, these unborn again creatures fill the Square as part of a daylong fright festival that also benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

With something happening nearly every day in the Square, we just have to mention these favorites such as the Farmers Market, the Carnegie Library's Tuesday Reading Room, Bike to Work breakfasts, the Salvation Army's Most Amazing Race, flash mobs of all sorts, YMCA exercise programs, the Vintage Grand Prix auto show, free concerts sponsored by the Market Square Merchants Association, scavenger hunts and much, much more. In fact, the nearly 50 officially permitted events scheduled during 2011 in the Square are almost twice the amount of permitted events that took place there in 2008— the last full year before the makeover. With 2012 adding an extra day to the calendar, we're not taking a great leap in saying that we'll find 527,040 ways to measure life in the Square next year.

When it comes to First Night, our first thought is "What's going on in Market Square on New Year's Eve?" You see, while tens of thousands of revelers ring out 2011 during Downtown's annual year-ending street party, there plenty of space where you can reflect on the past 365 days with family and friends in the cozy comfort of one of the Square's many dining hot spots that are offering special party packages of food, beverages and entertainment. With choices from fine Italian and homestyle Mexican to nouveau Creole accented cuisine and good old American burgers, here's a quick look at what's on the menu for the final countdown to 2012.

You can say "Ciao!" to 2011 at Bella Sera with three seating times for a special five-course, year-ending sendoff with starters like a caviar crepe or roasted corn and grilled shrimp chowder, entrees featuring delicacies from the land, air and sea, and tasty desserts that will have you singing "Auld Lang Syne" to your diet just before you resolve to start a new one on January 1, 2012. Even if Ebenezer Scrooge is getting a rude awakening or three on the stage of the Byham Theater this weekend during a run of "A Musical Christmas Carol," we're happy to say that we've not spotted ghosts of any sort at Market Square these days. Okay, maybe we do get a little spooked at the idea that there are only 16 shopping days left to wrap up our holiday shopping. But that's a story for another blog (hint, hint). Still, we thought we might take a short sleigh ride down memory lane to revisit some of Downtown's most-treasured remembrances of holiday traditions from seasons past.

Just so you know, we really searched around for some really old-time Christmas stories about Market Square.

One reason that we came up with nothing but a lump of coal is that early Americans didn't celebrate the occasion because they considered the custom to be "too English." In fact, the first Congress to serve under the newly ratified U.S. constitution stayed in session on Dec. 25, 1789.

Seriously, can you imagine that? Christmas started to turn a corner in America in the 1820s but it didn't become a big deal celebration until the mid-1800s. A Victorian Christmas focused a lot on generosity and small family celebrations. Of course, some of our local forefathers probably managed to enjoy the spirit of the season by imbibing the spirits of the season right in our very own Market Square. In the late 1800s maybe even in the Oyster House!

Most likely, these groggy old St. Nick's couldn't remember how they made merry on the morning after. Which is probably why we can't share any holiday tales on the Square.

But it's not our nature to "Bah, humbug" anyone. So let's put on our walking shoes to return to old haunts from holidays of a more recent vintage, when Downtown seemed to have more department store Santas than there are elves at the North Pole. Many of the stores even set up "special" shops where youngsters could buy inexpensive stocking stuffers for Mom and Dad after telling the big guy what big surprises they hoped to see under the tree.

Speaking of stores, everyone lined up back then to "oooo" and "ahhh" at the holiday window displays at Horne's and Gimbel's and Kaufmann's. From Thanksgiving evening to New Year's Day, the fabulous holiday scenes captured the imaginations of everyone from the tiniest tots to the tops execs of the city's Fortune 500 corporations.

Pittsburghers tuned their radios to 1020 AM during the holidays as KDKA DJ Jack Bogut spun his homey tales across the airwaves and raised money for the Children's Hospital Free Care fund as he broadcast from store windows while passersby pitched in for a great cause.

Trees have been a big deal for Downtown also. Check out this beauty at the City-County Building in 1933.

Each year, the biggest tree in town could be found at the corner of Penn and Stanwix clinging to the side of the Horne's store. Wrapped around the intersecting sides of the building, this towering conifer twinkled through the night all season long. Which sort of brings us back to the present because even though the names have changed, the tradition continues as the Unity Tree brightens Gateway Center and the "T" station from its perch on Highmark's Penn Avenue Place Building.

Somehow, we always manage to end up in the Square, where families are creating memories today for holidays of tomorrow, starting with Light Up Night(R) — a Pittsburgh tradition that crosses generations and even centuries — and continuing way past January 1 with the dazzling Eat 'n Park Season of Lights display that paints the Square with thousands of LED lights each evening.

Everyone has a favorite holiday song. Whether it's "Jingle Bells," "Frosty the Snowman," or "The Dreidel Song" they're the tunes that we just can't get out our heads during this time of the year. But when it comes to the soundtrack that we hear while we search for the perfect present for everyone on our gift list, we can't stop humming "You Better Shop Around." And we're here to tell you that shopping around Market Square strikes exactly the right chord during the holiday season.

Now we really don't need to tell you that the Square is one of the hottest dining destinations in the city these days. Honestly, it seems as though another great restaurant opens its doors in the Square every week. But we want to let you in on a really big secret — the Square is the perfect place to start your shopping spree. To make sure you put your best foot forward, there's no better place to start than the Nettleton Shop, where you'll discover some of the finest mens' shoes, boots and leather goods from around the world. Just across the street from the Mancini's/Prantl's shop, the Nettleton Shop's been a family-owned favorite of well-shod Pittsburgh gents since 1927.

For the ladies on your list, WEAR and Serendipity carry some of the trendiest, chicest and most affordable handbags, sunglasses, jeans, hats and other oh-so-cool accessories. ’Tis the Season in the Square

Now that the Duquesne Light Light Up Night(R) flipped the switch to "on" for an electrifying Downtown holiday shopping season, you can bet that the city's sidewalks will be busy sidewalks for the next few weeks during this most wonderful time of the year. Which means that every Saturday during the holiday season, Market Square will be at the heart of it all with special events and displays, carriage rides, and some of the newest and most exciting restaurants around town. So while you're checking your gift list a time or two, remember that Saturdays in the Square are a holly, jolly good way to add some cheer to the season.

Once you stash the Turkey Day leftovers in the freezer and recover from the rush and crush of Black Friday bargain hunting, a visit to the Square this Saturday is the perfect place for a little R & R. To help you unwind—and to entertain the youngsters —Eat'n Park's favorite cookie, Smiley, will turn just about any frown upside down this Saturday only, from noon-2 p.m.

While the kids say hi to Pittsburgh's yummiest mascot, grownups can treat themselves to an al fresco concert with local musicians. The Pittsburgh Scene and Salvation Army are teaming up make giving even groovier. Instead of the normal ting-a-ling, the sounds of local musicians will harken ye over to the red kettles. We hope you'll join us as we keep this "pot boiling"— as they say in the Army— to make the season a bit brighter for a those in need. This weekend they'll be providing come back up music for Smiley from noon - 2 p.m. On the following Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10, and 17, the live music will be an afternoon pick-me-up from 3 - 5 p.m.

We hope you don't have to go dashing through the snow to get to the Square this week. But once you do, there's no better way to rekindle memories of holiday seasons past than on a free horse-drawn carriage ride through one of the oldest sections of Pittsburgh. Every Saturday up to Dec. 17, you can giddy up and go on a mini tour of the town from 4-8 p.m. The line forms just across from the Square near the PPG skating rink. For the early birds, another free carriage leaves the starting gate at Oxford Centre from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for a jaunt in the Grant Street area, the city's political and legal hub.

Speaking of getting around, the Holly Trolley rolls just the way we like— from one shopping and sightseeing destination to another. Circling around town every 15 minutes, the two trollies loop around Downtown from Fifth Avenue Place to the Creche at the U.S. Steel Plaza and back— with a convenient stop in the Square. It's all aboard for the holidays every Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Now, with free parking at city-owned garages on Saturdays for the holiday season, you can stay Downtown all day long. But even if they fill up, others are still only $5 all day. Which means you'll have plenty of time to relax with a favorite beverage or two and hot meal in the Square, which is fast becoming the dining center of the city. From All-American burgers and a taste of New Orleans to authentic Italian cuisine and zesty Mexican dishes, the Square serves up something for nearly appetite.

And, yes, it's true that even stop lights blink a bright red and green this time of year, but you can catch one of the most dazzling holiday light shows right in the Square every evening from 5-10 p.m. That's when nearly 150,000 environmentally friendly LED bulbs dance to the music of your favorite holiday songs during the the Eat'n Park Season of Lights. Specially designed for the Square, the 33-foot tall "tree" made of red and white balls flashes in tune with lights on nearby buildings and lamp posts during special shows on the hour and half-hour.

There's no better place to catch the spirit of the season than with special events in Market Square every Saturday through December 17. Let's make this a truly happy holiday season.

Sparkle and Shine in the Square

You better bet we're making a list — or two — and checking everything more than twice to get ready for the 51st annual celebration of Downtown Pittsburgh's Duquesne Light Light Up Night(R) this coming Friday and Saturday. Always the biggest, brightest and most joyous neighborhood party of the year, Light Up Night(R) officially opens the Downtown holiday shopping season with family activities, food, concerts and an awesome big-bang display by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale called The Pittsburgh Brewing Company 150th Anniversary Fireworks Celebration. It'll fill everyone with the spirit of the season.

And when you're asking everyone in Downtown to keep the lights on for the party, there's no better sponsor than Duquesne Light to trip the lights fantastic for this high-wattage blast that attracts hundreds of thousands people to just about every nook and cranny of the radiant Golden Triangle. Of course, Market Square will once again be party central during Light Up Night(R) with dozens of hot spots to grab a bite to eat or sip a beverage to help you get your glow on as Downtown transforms into the Center of the Season. Since last year's two-day festivities left everyone yelling "Encore, encore," Light Up Night(R) 2011 is another doubleheader with a full slate of activities on Friday evening and all day Saturday.

This year Jolly Old St. Nick will prove that Mr. Claus is quite the song and dance man during the Celebrate Santa! Stage Show in Market Square, starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. With a little help from his friends — including Eat'n Park's Smiley cookie mascot — the merriest elf of them all will entertain the crowd before switching on the Eat'n Park Market Square Season of Lights. This holiday light show has nearly 150,000 LED lights and stars a 33-foot tall, one ton "tree" made of giant spheres that twinkle, blink and flash along with a synchronized soundtrack of beloved holiday songs.

For a different musical interlude, Etta Cox, Joe Negri, Billy Price, No Bad Ju Ju, Johnny Angel and the Halos and other hometown favorites will perform over the two days, on the Clemente Bridge on Friday evening and in the Square both days. And remember to bring your holiday shopping lists because Downtown's department stores, boutiques and restaurants will be open late just for you. First of all, we want everyone to crowd the Square to help us bid "Happy Winter" to all our good friends who've treated us to some of the best, freshest and most delicious locally grown and produced veggies and fruits, dairy products, meats, wines, desserts and other garden and kitchen delights. But the end is near. Very near. Which is why we need your help to get out the word that the Farmers Market's last day is here.

Bright Lights, Pretty City

Halloween is so last season. Which is why the Mayor, the King of Fireworks, a half dozen of Pittsburgh's favorite mascots, local celebs and Jolly Old St. Nick himself congregated in the Highwoods/PPG Place Wintergarden yesterday to announce the electrifying details of the 51st Duquesne Light Light Up Night(R) in Downtown, November 18-19. Now we don't want to keep you in the dark any longer on all the high-voltage happenings that put a spark in the city's annual holiday shopping season, so let's flip on the switch to discover what's in store for Downtown's most brilliant street party of the year.

Just like last year's party, the 2011 edition of Light Up Night will be twice as bright with two days of fun-filled, FREE, top-notch family entertainment, parades, food and holiday shopping throughout Downtown. Of course, Market Square will be at the center of it all. Local musicians like guitar man Joe Negri and and vocalist Etta Cox with hit all the right notes on the Northwest Savings Bank Market Square Stage, where Jeff Jimmerson and Airborne and the Borelli Dance Gallery will get the season off to a rockin' good start. For a full schedule of events on the Northwest Savings Bank stage, just check our online performance schedule for Friday and Saturday. And the party continues with free concerts on the Clemente Bridge, where the NOMaD, Johnny Angel and the Granati Brothers kick out the holiday jams with a mix of country, doo-wop and rock ’n’ roll sounds all night long.

Back for an encore, the Eat'n Park Market Square Season of Lights will will join Carin Mincemoyer's Diamond Diamonds to glow all season long in the Square. Made possible last year through the vision of Colcom Foundation and this year sponsored by Eat 'n Park, once again, nearly 150,000 energy-saving LED bulbs will twinkle throughout the evening on a 33-foot tall sphere tree and decorations on buildings and lamp posts across the Square. From November through January, the Season of Lights will entertain with a synchronized light and music show every half hour. If you missed this multi-megawatt show last year, make sure you stop by the Square to be delighted by the creation of Blachere Illuminations, the same people who made the Eiffel Tower and Disney World's Magic Castle shine. Eat'n Park will light up the Square during the showstopping "Celebrate Santa!" musical extravaganza as the Jolly Old Elf himself takes center stage with the help of some high-kicking elves.

Now there's no better way to wrap up the evening of Light Up Night(R) than with the amazing pyrotechnics of Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. Presented by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company, this explosive nightcap will paint the sky with Roman candles, comets, rainbows and other sizzling signature special effects from the first family of fireworks. Light Up Night is an alcohol-free event but it will also mark the day that Pittsburgh's own launches it's new Amber lager to join standards like Iron City and IC Light.

Okay, are you ready for more? Because there's more! On Saturday you'll find more music, dance and other entertainment in the Square from Noon - 9 p.m. For the blade runners in the crowd, the second annual Mascot Skate at the Rink at PPG Place is a great way to break the ice, so to speak. One Oxford Centre, Fifth Avenue Place and PPG Place have plenty of activities and entertainers for some family-friendly fun. And holiday shoppers can ride for free on the Fifth Avenue Place Holly Trolley as it rolls along to Downtown's favorite shopping spots from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday will also feature the second annual Horse-drawn Candlelight Carriage Parade with celebrity riders clip-clopping along Grant St., Fifth Ave. and Liberty Ave. from 6 - 8 p.m.

Game's On In The Square

Okay, so maybe the Pirates are a no-show in the World Series this year. But there are still plenty of ways to enjoy an Autumn Classic or two in Market Square now that baseball's ultimate championship series is underway. Leading off our lineup is the Farmers Market, which is down to its last few at bats before the season ends November 17. Though summer treats like corn on the cob and fresh berries won't make another plate appearance until next year, there's still plenty of farm fresh goodies on sale each Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. You can touch all the bases with this roasted squash and sweet potato recipe that's perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Best of all you can find all the ingredients in the Square during the Farmers Market. This is cool-weather comfort food at its best. It's also a great time to stock up on some frozen local meats to carry you through the winter.

We really like it when everyone gets along — especially when you're spending time in the Square. Yet, sometimes, difference do come between people. To discover how to resolve some of life's more trying disagreements, the wise minds of CLASP — that stands for Collaborative Law Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania — and the Collaborative Law Committee of the Allegheny County Bar Association will be holding court in the Square on Thursday to help interested parties discover how to resolve legal disputes such as divorce and other matters without matters getting hot and heavy.

We think that Market Square is already a pretty cool place. But, weather permitting, next Thursday, October 27th, the Mattress Factory will transform part of the Square into an al fresco art installation as part of their The Space I'm In project. Tamatebako was designed by Japanese artist Yumi Kori and fabricated here in Pittsburgh by Point Park University Technical Director, Michael Essad and Point Park University Costume Supervisor, Joan Markert. Tamatebako is a large-scale enclosed structure, containing columns and "peep holes" of various sizes and widths, which the participants can pop up inside. The contrast between the red and black fabric makes for a transformative experience. The larger project, The Space I'm In, is a multi-faceted project comprised of several different elements, designed by artists from around the world that uses elements of light, space, and sound to help learners of all ages to examine, experience and better-understand the environment that surrounds them. Let's just say that these days even we need to work overtime to keep up with all the new restaurants opening in and around Market Square. And while most of us can count more than a few of the current eateries among our favorites, the latest entries on the Square offer an even more diverse set of dining options that include everything from fresh takeout sushi to American-style comfort food and regional Italian cuisine from Naples. So get ready to dig in as we introduce you to newest dining hot spots on the Square.

The New Diamond Market Bar & Grill

After a few visits, the New Diamond Market Bar & Grill will be the kind of place where everybody knows your name. Friendly, familiar and fun — that's exactly the atmosphere owners Nick Nicholas and Jim Patrinos —they run Primanti's, too — wanted for their newest restaurant on the Square. Outside, the neon signs light up memory lane while the interior decor delivers a contemporary take on the cozy confines of a 1930s tavern from the Square's rough and tumble past. But not worry, the crowd inside is a good looking mix of casual upscale customers dressed in everything from designer business suits during lunch to Sid "The Kid" Crosby jerseys after a Pens victory. And with a menu that features everything from comfort food delights like mac and cheese to all-American, man-size, cooked-to-order Angus burgers, you won't leave hungry. And we almost forget to mention a beer lineup so diverse that every day is Oktoberfest.

Sinobi2Go

If you've gone fishing in the Square in the past to reel in some sushi, you probably come up with an empty line. Now, the catch of the day can be found wrapped, rolled and ready to eat at Sinobi2Go. Nicely tucked in on Market Street between the Prantl's/Mancini shop and New Diamond Market Bar & Grill, Sinobi2Go serves a big surprise on the traditional fish dish found in the Square with sushi rolls filled with turn, salmon, yellowfish and even brisket marinated in a spiced sweet Korean barbecue sauce. And for a Korean version of the good old American hotdog, order a Bulgogi Festival, a tasty combo of a wiener topped with Korean barbecue sauce, frank sausage and kimchi, a spicy, pickled slaw, which legend says slows the aging process. They also have a selection of tasty Asian beverages in a case by the check out. There is a small counter for dining in. La Cucina Flegrea

Scheduled to up later this month, La Cucina Flegrea is a newcomer to the Square, but savvy city foodies know that chef/owner Anna Fevola delighted diners for nearly a decade at her Squirrel Hill spot next to Jerry's Records. Though Anna's changing her location, she won't tamper with the traditional Naples-flavored recipes that earned her a strong following. Anna promises a menu that is still big on whole fish entrees, veal, and pasta. Now, if you're wondering just where in the Square to find La Cucina Flegrea, you will need to look up at bit as the eatery rises above it all in a second floor space on Graeme Street. Once you go in the doorway next to Bella Sera, it's short walk up the steps to Anna's graceful, yet comfortable bar and lounge where the after-work crowd can unwind on sleek sofas with custom cocktails and find affordable Italian fare. So if you're looking for a "step up" in Italian dining, La Cucina Flegrea is worth the climb.

Welcome To Zombie Square

Normally, we're ready to boast that Market Square is the liveliest place around. After all, just about anytime of the day, there's something great happening in the Square. But this Saturday — from noon- 9 p.m. — the heart of city goes completely "undead" when an expected 5,000-plus bodies rise from the grave for the ghoulish return of Zombie Fest and Walk in the Square.

The "brains" child behind the family friendly Zombie Fest is Mark Menhold, whose unbeautiful mind dreamed up this creepy celebration of the walking dead among us. And just to prove that zombies can indeed be the "life" of a party, there will be ghastly games during the Zombie Olympics, straight from the crypt cuisine that's to die for and death metal hardcore tunes from Four Barrel Ghost and Fistfight in the Parking Lot for a real monster mash. And did we mention that it's all for a good cause?

That's right. While zombies usually prowl for fresh flesh, these walking dead will help feed hungry Pittsburghers with donations of non-perishable food items for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Sure, they might be stone-cold lifeless killers, but you can't say that Pittsburgh's zombies don't have a heart — and if they don't, they'll settle for just about any other body part. Speaking of worthy causes, cash donations will be accepted for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund to battle breast cancer.

Just so that everyone has a little skin — not to mention blood and guts — in this game, Zombie Fest 2011 is looking to recapture bragging rights to the world's record for the largest single-day gathering of the undead. Right now, Seattle claims the title at 4,522. So Mark is urging as many of the area's zombies to get working on their worst looks to bring home the crown to the city of the living dead. Best of all, being part of the fun at Zombie Fest's second year in the Square won't cost you an arm and leg — literally — because admission is absolutely free.

If zombie watching is more your style, drop by the Square this Saturday, grab a cafe seat at your favorite Square watering hole or eatery, order your favorite dish and beverage and take in all the gut-busting sights during this one of a kind invasion of the world's most lovable creatures from the crypt. Who knows, you might even end up dancing in the street with a zombie conga line.

You might just want to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw for Under the Tent in Market Square — the opening night extravaganza that kicks off Pittsburgh Fashion Week 2011 on September 26. Now in its second year, PFW 2011 showcases the season's hottest looks from some of the fashion world's top designers. Created by Pittsburgh's own top model Miyoshi Anderson, PFW is putting the city on the fashion map with this seven-day revue of runway shows for women and men with some backstage assistance from the following sponsors: Izzazu, Piatt Place, McCormick & Schmick's, the Fairmont Pittsburgh, Capital Grille and Doncaster on Fifth.

Promising 60 different looks in 60 minutes, this fast-paced runway romp will dress 20 of the city's glammest models in fab fall and holiday designs straight from Doncaster's Big Apple studios. Emceed by Kristine Sorensen of KDKA-TV and WTAE's Wendy Bell, this catwalk caper struts its stuff for a good cause, too — with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Ladies Hospital Aid Society. And if you don't have your tickets yet, let's just say that passes for this high-watt tent show are selling faster than fish sandwiches at the Oyster House on Good Friday. A quartet of interior design gurus will create a big splash in the Square with Design Squared. Inspired by the gusher of new businesses springing up around the Square, the kitchen and bath design wizards at Splash — located at the corner of Fifth and Market — are teaming up with PPG Pittsburgh Paints (located in PPG 2, facing Market Square), Axor kitchen products of Hansgrohe International, and Cambria custom countertops for another fab event. On September 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Square will be filled with product debuts from the participating sponsors, seminars, classes and more for designers, architects and others in the home decor business, cooking demonstrations by the kitchen wizards at NOLA, and live music by the Olga Watkins band from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

While the designers have a jam-packed schedule of classes in the center main tent, all the great products and staff from Splash, PPG Paints, Axor and Cambria will be located in four smaller tents around the Square throughout the day. Geared to home interior designers, the general public is welcome to Design Squared to catch a sneak peek at a new line of color from Pittsburgh Paints, just off the drawing board quartz counters from Cambria, exclusive new Axor Hansgrohe kitchen and bath faucets and other hardware available only from Splash in a four-state region. Fall Into The Square This Week

Can you believe it? This is the very last week of summer 2011. As we count down the days to the start of autumn — which happens to be this Friday — we're also looking forward to a busy fall season in Market Square. In fact, we sneaked a peek at our events schedule, and it's as packed as the T leaving Downtown at rush hour. So this week you can join us as we gracefully glide into fall with plenty to do in the Square.

The bounty of fall continues this Thursday at the Farmers Market from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In fact, you can enjoy the best of the harvest when it comes to local produce, organic meats, flowers and some of the best food in town at the Farmers Market through mid-November. A favorite just about any time of the year, the Farmers Market actually spans three of the four seasons from late spring right up to the heart of autumn, bringing the freshest farm products and prepared foods right to the heart of the city.

We've got some bonus activities at the market this week. Renewal by Andersen will be onsight offering a chance to win replacement windows for your home. As the weather gets chillier you'll be glad you upgraded. Along with being warmer, you'll have that cozy glow that comes from saving money on your energy bills. Fall also means back to school, but not for all of us. Reading is Fundamental can help you curb those blues. They'll be on hand to sign people up for their Everybody Wins! program. It's is a lunchtime literacy and mentoring program that pairs elementary school students with volunteers from local companies and other community organizations to share lunch, conversation, and good books. And if these offers aren't enough, we'll be raffling off a $25 gift certificate to the Market Square business of your choice. Help us make the Farmers Market better by filling out an eight-question survey and you'll be entered into the drawing. Three lucky survey participants will be selected in October to enjoy a night on the town, Market Square style.

Plenty of people already pedal their way to town each day for work, shopping or just to grab a bite to eat in the Square before spinning back home. This Friday, Bike Pittsburgh invites all cyclists to drop by the Square for a breakfast of tasty pastries and refreshing beverages before heading off to the office. Bike Pittsburgh program director Lou Fineberg says the event will help everyone who attends discover how biking and other means of alternative transportation can help lower pollution, reduce traffic congestion, save on parking and improve your health. Plus, there will be a special announcement from the Port Authority for bikers who sometimes need a lift for themselves and their wheels. And most mysteriously, Lou promises a special "present" will be on hand during the event. Even though it will be carefully wrapped, Lou says what's underneath will be easy to figure out. To find out the secret, stop by the Square from 7:30-9:30 a.m. for this biker breakfast sponsored by the Pittsburgh Climate Initiative, the Port Authority, Zipcar and CommuteInfo.

If you're ready for the weekend, be sure to visit the Square for Tom Sarver's puppet show this Saturday. Internationally renowned, the founder of the Tom Museum on the North Side and part of a gallery exhibit currently open at Future Tenant on Penn Avenue, Tom will entertain and inform with a puppet show based on the classic Punch and Judy shows. And for those not running in the Great Race this Sunday, the Square is a Great Place to wait for those scampering through the streets of the city. Pick up a newspaper, a cup of coffee and a bite to eat and relax until your winner crosses the finish line.

Park It In And Around The Square

Want to come Downtown for dinner or a show but think it's hard to find parking? Did you know that there are more than 2,550 spaces in a half dozen parking garages located within a 2-3 minute walk of the Square? Forget all that trolling the streets for a spot, and slide right into a comfy garage. All these lots offer flat rates of $5 and $6 for an entire evening's parking. That's a whole lot of peace-of-mind for less than the cost of an appetizer. So read on to discover where you can find bargain parking rates within a stone's throw of the Square.

Sixth & Penn: Like the name says, the auto entrance for this garage is on Penn Avenue at Sixth Street. But a Liberty Avenue pedestrian entrance cuts down the walking distance to the Square. After 4 p.m., the normal rates drop to $6 for any of the 500 spaces inside. If you're going to a show at Heinz Hall, Sixth & Penn is the perfect location for an evening that includes a pre- or apres-show dinner in the Square.

Fifth Avenue Place: Tucked away at the very end of Fifth Avenue, this 270-space underground garage sits below the Highmark Building. It's the perfect prescription for the parking blues with a $5 rate after 5 p.m. As you walk to the Square, take a look up at the corner of Liberty and Fifth to take in the triangular-shaped Diamond Building across the street, one of Downtown's many early 20th-century skyscrapers.

Town Place Garage: Located on Stanwix Street, next to the main PPG Place building, 100 prime parking spots await you. On your way to the Square, stop at the PPG Plaza to watch the dancing waters of the plaza fountain during the warm weather months or admire the graceful skaters on the Hillman Rink when winter arrives. After 5 p.m., the parking rate is just $5.

PPG Place Garage: One of two garages with entrances on Third Avenue, PPG Place offers 707 spaces of parking under Philip Johnson's glimmering, neo-Gothic, 40-story glass tower. You won't need to reflect too long to realize that the after-4 p.m. rate of $5 is a special, too.

Third Avenue Garage: Almost across the street from PPG Place, the Third Avenue Garage offers the choice of entrances and exits on Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. After 5 p.m., any of the garage's 570 spots can be yours for just $5. By the way, if you need new heels on your evening footwear, there's even a shoe repair shop near the Fourth Avenue entrance.

Three PNC Plaza: You might not recognize the name. But you'll know the location when we tell you that this 335-spot garage is in the city's newest high-rise that just happens to be the home of the fabulous Fairmont Hotel, between Fifth and Liberty Avenues. Once the clock strikes 4 p.m., the parking rate drops to $5.

The cherry on top of this parking sundae... the great $5 and $6 flat rates at these garages are in effect all day long on Saturdays and Sundays — no matter what time of the day you park or how long you stay. When it comes to finding a good meal in Downtown — morning, noon or night — Market Square offers a tasty smorgasbord of choices that ranges from the classic Primanti's sandwich to traditional, rustic Italian dishes at Bella Sera. From Cajun cuisine and Mexican comfort food to all-American burgers and piping hot pepperoni pizza, the Square serves up something for just about any appetite — with even more eateries set to open soon.

But we want to point out that the Square is the perfect place to pick up fresh produce, organic meats, fresh spice mixes and other locally produced items to whip up a last-minute meal while you adjust to the start of the new school year. Of course, you can find all this and more every Thursday at the Farmers Market in the Square from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. So whether you're a a parent on the run or a budget-minded student looking to eat healthy, the Farmers Market is the place to find everything for a variety of meals you can prepare in 30 minutes or less. We're even going to help you out with some easy-to-follow recipes. So read on.

Let's start off easy with a Greens and Beans meal. All the fixins are cabinet staples, you just need to add the fresh greens. You can find a slew of choices at Harvest Valley Farm's stand. So buy some local bread from Rise Above Bakery and have no fear. Or, rejoice that you have a use for all the leftover hot dog buns from your Labor Day BBQ. Fall is in the air and that means college students are back in Market Square. As far as extra curricular activities, the Square has plenty to offer from fab fashion finds and affordable food to free nightlife and quiet study spaces. So we're going to take few moments here to offer a refresher course to help students from Point Park University, the Art Institute, Duquesne University and all the others get reacquainted with the Square.

Okay, so you're back in town. You met your new roommates. Your class schedule is set. And you said good-bye to your parents. Now you're ready to hit the town to see what's new and catch up on your favorite places. Funny thing is, one of the newest places is a very familiar face. Okay, we won't keep you guessing because Las Velas is back and better than ever. After closing to repair damage from an electrical fire, the Mexican hotspot is back in business in its old perch overlooking the Square. The menu still features some spicy standbys, plus new dishes that pack plenty of authentic South of the Border heat. And with an appetizer menu that's easy on the budget, you'll say "Ole!"

No matter how many clothes you bring to school, there's always something missing from your wardrobe. Luckily, the Square is the place to go when a fashion emergency strikes. If you just happened to discover Serendipity in the Square, you'll find one of the hippest shops in all of Pittsburgh for the latest accessories from New York and LA. And for a new pair of jeans or sunglasses, check out WEAR for hot looks at cool prices.

Look, no matter how good the food in the school cafeteria might be, students need a little variety on their menu. Well, there's no better place in Pittsburgh to seek out dining diversity than in the Square, where you'll find everything from freshly ground, all-American hamburgers at Wingheart's Burger and Whiskey Bar to traditional slices of Italian pizza at Fat Tommy's. But that's only the start. Take a trip around the Square to sample the choices. For student budgets, it's sometimes good to take half home or split with a friend. For a meal to stretch, try the heavy duty Tex-Mex burritos at Chipotle and Moe's Southwest Grill, super subs at DiBella's, Pepperoni Rolls at Mancini's, giant burgers and the amazing veggie burger at Winghart's, a foot-long at Subway, or a pizza or toasted sub at La Gondola. For a "just right" meal with a "just right" price, try the mini fish sandwich with homemade chips from the Oyster House at $2.79, or one quick taco at Moe's to get you through that next 3-hour class. The breakfast sandwiches at Bruegger's, Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks offer some light-weight prices any time of the day that are easy to scarf down as you run to down a City block. We think you're not having a real Pittsburgh experience if you don't eat the whole gut-busting sandwich at Primanti's so that's an outlier in this list. And the Cajun flavored menu at NOLA and gourmet Italian offerings at Bella Sera are perfect places for dinner when mom and dad are picking up the check. So maybe you'll need a quiet place to study, away from that roommate who can't find figure out how to turn down the volume on the iPod. The tables in the Square are ideal for catching up on reading assignments. And the comfy corners of Starbucks and Crazy Mocha are well suited for sipping a cup of coffee while studying Shakespeare. Of course, if you need your java during an all-nighter, you can grab some freshly roasted beans at Nicholas Coffee along with some tasty snacks to munch as you type.

Some things you might not immediately think you need but will be glad you knew about... Dry Cleaning! Spilled coffee on your interview outfit but need it back ASAP? The nights are also a bit brighter this year. Not only are many of the businesses open later in the evenings (and on weekends!) but Market Square is sporting some bling. Local artist, Carin Mincemoyer's work Diamond Diamonds dangles and decorates the light posts on Market Street, connecting the Square and the Cultural District, just as it's diamond imagery connects the Square with it's past. Did you know "the square" used to be "the diamond?"

For some nightlife that won't take a big bite out of your budget, the sounds of the Crescent City fill the Square as live musicians play at NOLA every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. And the best part is that anyone can sit in the Square and enjoy the music for free - the front wall of NOLA opens up so you can see all the way back to the open kitchen. It's the best entertainment value around. What's Brewing In The Square

It's up in the morning and off to school — again — as Labor Day looms on the calendar. And while the students in your life deal with the three Rs, you might be looking for a little R & R after a hectic morning of getting the kids off to school, before you pop into the office for your own daily grind. And if you're reading this, you already know there's no better place to unwind and steal a few precious moments than Market Square, with a cuppa of Joe and a sweet treat before heading off to your own busy day of work Downtown.

Everyone knows that the some of the city's favorite and oldest dining institutions call the Square home. But one of our favorite drinking establishments —the Nicholas Coffee Co. — has been a mainstay on the Square for more than 80 years. One of the perks of being the old kid on the Belgian blocks is that Nicholas Coffee roasts and brews a hearty, straight-up traditional black coffee that's always right on the mark. For a more modern twist on your morning kick start, Nicholas Coffee serves a tasty mix of specialty concoctions that's sure to please just about any taste.

While Nicholas Coffee is part of Pittsburgh history, Crazy Mocha is busy adding new chapters to its own story. Just a little over a decade old, this fast-growing regional chain started with three locations and is now kicking up its heels at more than two dozens spots around the area, with more sites opening just about everywhere these days. For a quick, nutritious breakfast on the go, choose nutty, fruity or any of the wholesome flavors of Umpqua Oats with your java. Tucked in the southwest corner of the Square, as part of PPG Plaza, Crazy Mocha brings a modern touch to the coffeehouse tradition with its bright, colorful stores and adds another local flavor to the scene.

Another Pittsburgh favorite earned a sweet reputation in Shadyside before opening a location on the Square. If you haven't figured out our next stop, Prantl's is the place. Sharing space with Mancini's on Market Street, Prantl's is great for coffee on to go, plus an old fashioned doughnut or two. Of course, there are plenty of fresh made tasty cakes, cupcakes and other pastries, including its famous burnt almond torte. Great for a mad dash morning stop on the way to the office, Prantl's and Mancini's are perfect for a more leisurely mid-day or lunch time break, too.

We do love our hometown brews. But a couple of chains serve some great fresh blends on the Square, too. The new-look Dunkin Donuts in the Square is open early and late every day, including Sundays. Which is perfect for Steelers fans who park Downtown and need a caffeine and sugar boost to kick off their football frenzy. And for those happy souls not under the guidance of a sweet tooth, they've got plenty of flatbread sanwiches to keep you warm on that walk across the bridge. And Breugger's puts the "brew" in bagels with its bagels and coffee. Make it fun for the kids with bagel bites and grab a soup and salad for lunch to maximize efficiency. At Starbucks the line can look long but they move you fast. Don't worry though, there's plenty of time to decide which artisinal breakfast sandwich will start your day right and let you leave the hectic morning behind.

As the kids prepare hit the books to start another school year, you can always count on finding a cup of coffee in the Square that always makes the grade.

A Good Read — And More — In The Square

We're going to keep turning the pages for the Carnegie Library's Tuesday Reading Room in Market Square. Just in case all you bookworms didn't already mark your calendar, staff members from the Library's Downtown branch will park its book cart in the Square every Tuesday right up to October 11. That means there's plenty more chances to browse this rolling bookstore that's packed with great reads at bargain prices of just 50 cents for paperback books and $1 for hardcovers. And every time you buy a novel, how-to guide, memoir or any of the terrific selections on hand each week, the proceeds will help keep the Carnegie Library system and programs like the Reading Room going strong.

But there's more to the Reading Room. Each Tuesday through the end of the month, a special guest speaker will be on hand from noon - 1 p.m. to help Reading Room fans to, well, read between the lines, you could say, on various topics. For instance, this week, writer and local entrepreneur Razi Imam will speak about Junoon, an amazing force that helps people overcome barriers that often prevent them from reaching their true and full potential. Razi also will talk about his best-selling self-help book, Driven: A How-To Strategy to Unlock your Greatest Potential. Ravi has harnessed this force to start several local high-tech companies, including Landslide Technologies and 113 Industries. So why not stop by to discover how you can be all that you can be?

Did you ever wish you could speak another language — or even three? Well, let's just say that the Mango Languages system could put a few new words in your mouth. Praised by The Los Angeles Times as a great resource for travelers, Mango can help you master 30 languages from French to Mandarin Chinese through a variety of audio and visual tools. Back by popular demand, "30 Books in 30 Minutes" is a speedy way to get a quick read on a book that maybe didn't quite make the radar as far as best-seller lists or even Oprah's Booklist. Selected by the Library staff, these choice picks include new, old and some offbeat titles selected by the people who know best what's worth reading on the library's shelves. Quick and to the point, this fast-paced half-hour book review is sure to help you check out a couple titles just right for you.

Now, we have an inside source at the library who tells us that these lunchtime talks will continue during September and October, with a special floral arrangement session where attendees can bring their own live blooms or dried flowers for tips on creating an amazing autumn bouquet. And for a really sweet treat, Danielle Spinola of Tupelo Honey Teas will steep a pot or two of her specialty brews that A-List guests are sipping at some of the city's swankiest parties. When she's not at the Square, you can catch a buzz from Danielle's teas at the Pittsburgh Public Market in the Strip.

One thing we've learned about Pittsburghers who visit the Square during lunch each Tuesday is that they have a big appetite — for books. But we really hope that everyone who stops by the Reading Room discovers what Molly Krichten already knows about the Carnegie Library system...

"We are glad to be a part of everything that's going on in Market Square," says Molly, who is the coordinator of LYNCS, which stands for Libraries in Your Communities and Schools. "The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has dedicated itself to making the Square an exciting place. When people visit the Reading Room in the Square, we want them to learn that the library is doing really cool things in Pittsburgh, too."

Lesson learned, Molly. And you can be sure we'll be booking it to the Square.

Summer's Last Stand in The Square

We're not ready to pull the plug on summer just yet. But the end is near. Just look at all those back to school ads, earlier sunsets and even some leaves on the trees are turning brown. Of course, there's plenty going on in Market Square, even after Fall descends upon us. Still, we wanted to remind you that time is winding down to enjoy a few of our programs in the Square. So get ready to catch these great events.

KidsPlay: Only two more play dates left in the Square for the youngsters. This Friday, Pittsburgh's own Macaroni Kids drops by the Square with the good folks from UPMC, who run the CHIP health care program for youngsters. While the Macaroni Kid team dishes out the inside scoop on where parents can get great deals on family meals, vacations and other child-related matters, the CHIP crew offers the perfect prescription on delivering vital health care services for children whose families might be struggling to make ends meet.

To close out KidsPlay for the year on August 19, That Guy With The Birds returns for an encore performance of his wonderfully wacky and talented winged friends. Always a treat for kids and grownups, That Guy With the Bird's fine feathered friends are guaranteed to put on a show that soars.

For a bit of Mid-Week Music in the Square, a trio of Wednesday noontime concerts remain, kicking off this week with the Sun Kings and finishing out on August 24, when the Lava Game performs under the Square's performance tent.

Thursdays in the Square: Don't worry. The Farmer's Market will continue to set up shop in the Square until almost Thanksgiving. But if you've got the music in you, there are only two more Thursday free concerts on tap. First up is The Whiskey Holler this Thursday at noon to play their raucous version of roots rock ’n’ roll.

And to close out this summer's set is Emily Pinkerton, who strums a delicious fusion of South American and bluegrass on her banjo and guitar. An incredible talent, Emily's appeared at the hip SXSW festival in Austin and played on NPR. Don't miss this fantastic finale.

Sweatin' in the Square: If you're still trying to shed a few pounds for those new fall fashions, you can sweat away a few calories during the PNC Y's last three free exercise sessions in the Square. These free al fresco workouts, every Friday from noon- 1p.m. are a great way to shape up in the great outdoors and soak up a few of those rays during these dog days of summer. It's also a chance to try something new, with a different type of exercise each week.

There's still some sizzle left in this summer. And several programs run later into the Fall: the Farmers Market, Tuesday Reading Room and music at Monday lunches and Friday happy hours from the Market Square Merchants Association.

A New Chapter In Reading

Welcome Back, Las Velas

Sure, the date on the calendar might tell you that end is near for the month of July. But the mood in Market Square these days is more Cinco de Mayo now that Las Velas re-opened its doors for business. Nearly eight months after a fire shut down the Mexican hot spot, owner David Montanez is once again saying "Hola" to customers in search of authentic spicy dishes from South of the Border. While the official Grande Re-Opening happens Friday, we stopped in for a sneak peek — and a margarita — of the only restaurant that offers a bird's eye view of the Square.

Above it all, we slowly sipped our beverage as the lunchtime crowd strolled into the Square to listen the Wednesday Mid-Week Music concert — and walked up to our perch to reacquaint themselves with Las Velas' authentic Mexican meals on a menu that's as familiar as an old friend's smile. By noon, sunshine and happy patrons filled Las Velas and David was grinning from ear to ear as he watched his staff serve tray after tray of freshly prepared platters of food that will leave you satisfied and wishing for a midday siesta.

Las Velas' food focuses on the flavors of David's youth, growing up in Mexico City and moving to the Riviera Maya region. We're happy to report that you'll find all your favorites on the menu, including enchiladas, burritos, fresh seafood and traditional soft-shell tacos. A little twist - you can now get your tacos Mexican style (onion and cilantro) or Tex-Mex (lettuce, tomato, cheese). And, everything is as muy delicioso as we remember. Plus, you'll want to try some new features such as the soup of the day and a new ingredient in many of the meals — blanco queso. In case you "no hablo Espanol" that translates as a tasty traditional white Mexican cheese that's as delicious to eat as it is to say. While he wanted the re-opening to recreate Las Velas as it was before, we think you'll enjoy the physical changes made the cut like windows that open onto the Square, tile where there was carpet, and the bar has been opened up so the interior seating now has a grand view of the Square... David hopes to add a few new touches such as an al fresco lunchtime taco stand and a full-blown annual Cinco de Mayo party.

We're plenty pleased that Las Velas is back on the Square. Truth be told, David admits that he received a tempting offer to set up shop way out in the ’burbs. We're happy to report that he remained true to Downtown and the Square because as he says, "Market Square is where things are really happening." Of course, we second that — and are glad to welcome back one of the most happening restaurants in the Square.

Free Wheeling In The Square

Ladies and Gentlemen, stop your engines.

That's right, the classic chassis spotlighted in this year's Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix annual Downtown Parade will once again pull in to Market Square this Wednesday, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. This must-see caravan of antique autos will start rolling at 10:30 a.m. from the Spaghetti Warehouse at 26th Street in the Strip before stepping on the brakes at USX Plaza, PPG Place and, of course, the Square.

A local tradition that knows how to put the pedal to the metal for a good cause, the parade and display are just two of the many PVGP events that benefit the Allegheny Valley School and Autism Society of Pittsburgh. The real winner of the PVGP are the kids and adults with autism and other developmental challenges who will receive residential care, treatment and support from event proceeds. Always a big draw, the cars include every type of four-wheel beauties from Model-A Fords to sporty European roadsters to All-American Muscle Cars made right here in the U.S.A. Out of approximately 95 antique, classic and race cars in the parade, organizers anticipate 50 cars in Market Square (weather dependant) and about half of those are expected to be Porsches, the 2011 Marque of the Year.

Now, along with all those fabulous autos from yester-year, DJ Kelli Burns will be spinning classic cars songs and other tunes to keep your feet tapping throughout lunchtime and beyond. And don't forget that the auto display is just one of the many preliminaries that leads up to the Grand Prix race in Schenley Park on July 24. Celebrating its 29th year, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is the only race of its type run entirely on city streets. So get your motor running now and head to the Square this Wednesday.

Another group of free wheeling types will put the rubber to the road when Bike Pittsburgh hosts a BikePool Extraganza in the Square on Friday, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Part of the group's Car Free Fridays, this pedalpalooza is open to anyone on two wheels looking for fellow bike travelers who want to buddy up for the ride to Downtown or other parts of the city. As Bike Pittsburgh's Lou Feinberg points out, bike pools are a great way for newbies and others to learn the rules of the road and enjoy the camaraderie and benefits of riding in groups.

With city officials recently visiting Minneapolis to discover how Pittsburgh can enhance its already bike friendly status, Lou points out that riding in a group increases every riders' visibility and safety on the road. But the real advantages are in what more experienced riders can share in the way of scenic routes along the city's miles and miles or riverside trails, protected parking spaces at many Downtown parking garages and traffic safety tips.

Biking is a great way to shed a few extra pounds and improve cardio fitness, after all, your ride is powered by the most fuel-efficient engine around — the human body. Plus, bike commuting can drastically reduce money spent on gas, parking and even car maintenance. And a down the road "plus" is that, environmentally speaking, every bike on the road is one less car, one less fossil-fuel burning vehicle producing exhaust. That's a big plus for the the world around us, including the cleaner air you'll breathe on your bike ride to town.

To help you get rolling, Bike Pittsburgh ride leaders will guide pedalers into the city from various points around the area. To find this Friday's groups, visit the Bike Pgh event page and click on the map. Once they arrive in the Square, the pedal pushers can refresh with treats from NuGo and VitaminWater. On top of that, Bike Pittsburgh staff will be on hand to provide more information on how to find and join bike pools when it's not a Car Free Friday. By the way, bike racks are located all around the Square, so that you can safely secure your ride. So, get your big wheels rolling to the Square. We'll see you there.

Halftime Report on the Square

Okay, just in case you're not keeping score at home, we wanted to let you know that Market Square is on track for a banner year. Just the other day we were checking the record books and discovered that in 2008 — the last full year before the Square's dramatic makeover — 34 events happened in the Square. Which was actually a pretty good total. But at the mid-point of 2011 — the first full year of the transformed Square — we tallied up 32 events so far with even more to come.

So, during this holiday-shortened working week, we've put together a photo album of some of 2011's high points in the Square. And if you look closely, you might even see yourself in a shot or two.

Even during the dead of winter, the Pittsburgh faithful turned out to show their pride during a high-five contest between Pittsburgh and Green Bay fans. While the Green Bay won the battle on the gridiron, we triumphed in the Square.

We're always proud of our Scotch-Irish heritage in Pittsburgh — especially on St. Patrick's Day. This year's greening of the Square included special family friendly activities.

Always a popular lunchtime destination, the Square's menu got even better with the opening of three new eateries this year, including Winghart's Burger and Whiskey Bar. By the way, Wingheart's is now open until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and Saturday noon - 5 p.m.

For one of the meatiest sandwiches in town, the debut of DiBella's rocked the boat with choice cuts on freshly made bread.

With the opening of NOLA, diners in the Square can enjoy the cuisine of New Orleans and a taste of Mardi Gras all year round.

The Mayor and other dignitaries gave us a little history lesson as they unveiled a plaque recognizing the Market Square area's role in the Underground Railroad and Abolitionist Movement.

Springtime brings the return of the Farmers Market — a bounty of fresh. from-the-field foods and homemade treats from June through November.

There's something going on in the Square for everyone — including the wee ones. Kidsplay is a great way to introduce the young ones to the Square on Friday mornings in the summer from 10 - 11:30 a.m.

Our Thursday noontime concerts are a great way to relax and enjoy some of Pittsburgh's best musicians. Plus, you can tap your feet with live performances during the Market Square Merchant Association's Monday and Wednesday lunchtime shows and special Friday Happy Hour concerts.

For those seekking something more active on their lunch break, the YMCA has been hosting free outdoor exercise classes every Friday from noon - 1 p.m.

Let's be frank. We take our championships seriously in this town. Which is why we relished hosting a regional contest to select a male and female winner to participate in the annual Fourth of July Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Championship on the famed boardwalk of Coney Island. Though our champs didn't earn the ultimate crown,
they devoured the local competition with a throng cheering them on.

Whatever the reason, the Square is just a great place to relax with friends — anytime of the day.

Sparkle Plenty In The Square

Opening night in the Square and Diamond Diamonds scored rave reviews even before the morning papers hit the news stands. This dazzling new art installation, created by the talented Carin Mincemoyer, entranced passersby who strolled along Market Street, or as we like to call it, Pittsburgh's "Great Bright Way." On a perfect summer's eve, Diamond Diamonds lit up the skies with plenty of star power to fuel a long run in one of the city's hottest hot spots — Market Square.

More than 15 months in the making, Diamond Diamonds was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and made possible through the work of the Office of Public Art and the City of Pittsburgh. Designed for daytime and nighttime enjoyment, it illuminates the Square's past as "the diamond" and serves as a guiding light to attract even more people to the Square and its many dining, shopping and recreational opportunities.

But the real high-watt driving force behind Diamond Diamonds is Carin Mincemoyer. A CMU grad, the renowned artist led a team of welders, laser cutters and electricians to bring her stellar vision to light. The result is a brilliant scultpure in two parts, perched upon two city lamp posts on Market Street. Thus, her creation graces the street lights like a pair of Tiffany diamond earrings, Carin hopes that people will take a moment to look up. And what they'll see is a steel matrix of energy-saving LED lights twinkling inside 80 acrylic fixtures shaped like — what else? — diamonds.

"I really want people to be surprised to see art hanging from the street lights when they're walking towards Market Square," Carin admits. "I picked the diamond theme to reflect on the Square's past and to play on the idea that a diamond is usually the focal point in a great piece of jewelry. I really hope that Diamond Diamonds will become a beacon that draws people from the Cultural District and other parts of Downtown to the Square." After teaming with Rick Frontera of Allegheny City Electric on a cloudy Tuesday morning to install Diamond Diamonds, Carin returned for the first night lighting with Rick, Renee Piechocki and Kate Hansen from the Office of Public Art, and Keny Marshall, artist, welder on the project and Carin's husband.

As the power trio looked on, the turn of the century light fixtures flickered and then burned bright as Diamond Diamonds wowed onlookers, including Pittsburgh's own denizens and out-of-town visitors who stopped to snap a few photos for keepsakes. While Carin explained the theme behind Diamond Diamonds to admirers, Renee pointed out that "we really wanted to create something beautiful, thoughtful and interesting in this space. And to help people understand how it all ties in with the Square's history as Pittsburgh Diamond, we'll be installing be a plaque that details it all on each light pole."

Artist Talk and Reception
The Office of Public Art and Pittbsurgh Downtown Partnership invite you all to meet the artist in-person and view the sculptures. On Thursday, July 14 the artist talk will take place on the 4th Floor of the Buhl Building, and the reception will take place in Market Street beneath the sculptures, block party style. With Opening Night reviews in, Diamond Diamonds will be the sight to see when the lights go down in the city and the bright lights of Market Street switch on.

Marketing The Square

Really, it's no secret that Market Square is one of the hottest go-to lunchtime stops for most people living, working or just dropping in on Downtown. Now one group of people — besides us — wants to spread the word that there's something going on in the Square just about anytime most days of the week. Which is why the Market Square Merchants Association (MSMA) is extending an open invitation to everyone to enjoy Summer in the Square — and much more.

"The goal of the association is simple," says Mike Geiger, an MSMA member and owner of Moe's Southwest Grill in the Square. "We want to provide everyone who visits the very best experience possible, whether they're here for lunch, St. Patrick's Day, Light-Up Night or any other day of the year."

Now there are certainly plenty of special occasions to plan a trip to the Square. But the truth is that the very best reason to spend some time in the heart of Downtown is the merchants in and around the Square. In one of the city's most compact shopping and dining districts, you'll find hip clothing stores, stylish shoe shops, bakeries, pizza parlors, Mexican-flavored dishes, classic American burgers, longtime Pittsburgh eateries, donuts, New Orleans infused cuisine, coffee shops, traditional Italian, and hoagies and submarine sandwiches. They're all within a few seconds walk from the center of the Square — and many are open for business every day from the early hours of the morning to way past sundown.

Whether you start off with a Mellow Mondays lunchtime concert, get over the hump with some Mid-Week Music or unwind after a long week at work with a drink and dining special during Friday Night Live performances, the MSMA wants you to know this is Downtown's newest entertainment, dining and shopping venue. Tomorrow evening features Jamie Bruno at 5pm and Saddle Up at 6pm with prizes and give aways from Y108. It will be like a little preview for the July 2 Kenny Chesney concert - Saddle Up will be playing Heinz field that day also.

But, as they shout out in those wacky TV ads—wait, there's more! With a new can-do spirit of pulling together, the MSMA is planning to bring even bigger events to the Square all year-round, like the spooktacular Zombie Fest. And they are busy telling people that the Square is the perfect place for al fresco conferences, parties, weddings and just about any happening you can imagine.

So the next time you visit the Square, think about what brought you there. And chances are, the answer will be a stop at one of the many members of the MSMA.

Diamonds in the Square

You don't really need a map to find your way to Market Square. But do you think you could locate the biggest Diamond in the City? Here's a clue... it's not in a jewelry store. Truth is, the "Diamond" is the historical name of the Square, which is why Forbes Avenue once was called Diamond Street. These days, we like to think that the Square is a glittering diamond that's at the heart of Downtown. So, let's take a look at how a once rough and tumble frontier spot transformed into a Diamond and then a rock solid stellar Square of a city showplace.

Now everyone knows that the British chased the French out of the region between the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers to establish the settlement in 1758. The Diamond officially took shape 20 years later when the Penn family surveyed the land nearby their manor home at Ft. Pitt at the Point. In a big time act of generosity, the Penns signed over to the city the deed to the land so that it could be put to good use as a social, civic and merchants' gathering spot. At its four corners, the Diamond pointed north, south, east and west and served as a compass for visitors who enjoyed the taverns and inns around the Diamond. Kind of sounds familiar, doesn't it?

While the British settled the area, the Diamond bears strong traces of our City's heavy Scotch-Irish heritage. Even today, one of the streets leading to the Square is called McMasters Way. And it turns out that Diamonds can still be found throughout the northern area of the Emerald Isle in places such as Rapahoe, Clones and a town called Donegal, which just happens to have a counterpart here in Western Pennsylvania. Donegal's Diamond is pictured above, used just as Pittsburgh's was before the court house and market was built. In Architectural Heritage of Western Pennsylvania, Charles Stotz writes, "Public squares or "Diamonds" were common in many early American towns, intended as 'practical provisions for the overnight parking of coaches, wagons, and horses rather than for beautification . . . [and as] social centers for towns.'" And just across the Allegheny River, the land that sits in front of the former Buhl Science Center — now part of the wonderful Children's Museum — was a grassy expanse known as Diamond Park. Back then, it was the center of Allegheny City and just across the street from its very own Market House. Seems that Diamonds and Market Houses made good partners.

Well, very soon, diamonds will sparkle again in the Square thanks to artist Carin Mincemoyer, whose installation of 8-inch tall Plexiglas "diamonds" will accessorize lamp posts at the entrance of the Square. At night, LED lights will make the diamonds glitter and glow as people pass below to dine in the Square or just spend some time enjoying the summer winds and sounds of live music from NOLA and other hot spots. Weiners, Wheels and Wednesday Concerts

It's not exactly the Gunfight at the OK Corral. But some of the planet's most prodigious consumers of wieners will belly up to the table for a just-past high noon showdown in Market Square on Wednesday to claim bragging rights and a chance to compete in the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 at New York City's Coney Island. As just one of 13 regional contests in the U.S., this matchup of select super eaters promises to bring out some formidable contenders for the championship belt, which might need to be expanded a few notches.

So here's how it works. Up to 20 contestants —both men and women — will try to beat the clock and each other by eating as many Nathan's Famous natural casing franks, including buns, in 10 minutes. For stat happy fans, each of the dogs tips the scales at two ounces with the buns weighing in at less than a half-ounce. Just to see what local participants are up against, Joey Chestnut, the current world champ, holds the world record with a gut-busting 68 dogs in 10 minutes. While you don't need to break the current mark to qualify, female contestants need to down at least 10 dogs to qualify. Just in case you think the challenge is tough, keep in mind that the local winners will take home of year's supply of Nathan's hot dogs and receive free airfare and hotel accommodations to take part in the ESPN televised Fourth of July eat off at America's most famous amusement park, where the grand prize is $20,000. And if you're not quite ready to go bun to bun this year with the region's top eaters, you can start training today for 2012 at Pittsburgh's own Nathan's Famous location on the corner of Third Avenue and Wood Street, which happens to be owned and operated by the YWCA. The dogs go down starting at 10 minutes past the stroke of noon.

While hungry competitors prepare for the wiener wars, the friendly folks at the Market Square Merchants Association will start its Mid-Week Music Series in Market Square, sponsored by Star 100.7 with the island infused tunes of the Lincoln Park Steel Drum Band. Every Wednesday through August 24, the Square will be alive with the sound of music from some of the region's top performers. And the beat will go on during the Mellow Monday and Friday Night Live series, too, as the Merchants strike up the bands for more performances in the Square all summer long. Check back here for more info on those events.

Of course, we like to think that the Farmers Market in the Square strikes exactly the right chord every Thursday, with a pitch perfect blend of wholesome foods and music from local talents. As the growing season progresses, look for more farm fresh delectables, free City Paper, and area entertainers to show up as part of our Thursdays in the Square events.

If you're looking for a wheel deal, then pedal your way to Market Square during this week's Farmers Market for a bike-sharing program demonstration by B-cycle. Similar to the Zipcar auto-sharing program already in the city, B-cycle is designed to allow members to borrow and return bikes from designated stations for as little as $5 for 24 hours use. Dance To The Music

Sure you can rhyme "June" with "moon." But we prefer to go with a "June" and "Tune" match to announce the start of our weekly Thursday noontime concerts in Market Square, starting this week and going through August 18. This year's series hits a high note from the start with one of Pittsburgh's favorite rockers, Bill Deasy. And be sure to check our events calendar every week to see who's taking the stage. Best of all the hottest concert ticket in the Square is absolutely free. All summer you can tap your feet to a variety of rock, country, soul, jazz and more as some of Pittsburgh's most talented musicians sing, dance and play during the Farmers Market. Now that's what we call one sweet duet.

While grownups get to have fun in the Square nearly every day, we're setting aside one day a week especially for youngsters to enjoy themselves during Kidsplay. The fun starts this Friday, June 3 from 10-11:30 a.m. and continues each week through August 19. With a mix of educational and entertaining activities, Kidsplay is a great for parents and their children to experience the Square in a family friendly atmosphere. From McGruff the Crime Dog to that Guy with the Birds, Kidsplay is fun for everyone. To see what's in store this year, check the Kidsplay schedule now.

School may be out soon. But we think learning never stops. And there's no better way to discover more about Market Square than a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation tour. Led by some ace architectural and history buffs, the Market Square area tours are great to discover some of the most amazing things in and around the Square — and to learn just how Pittsburgh came to be one of the best and most important cities in the U.S.A. The tours are free, but the number of walkers is limited. You'll cover a lot of ground and information during the one-hour tours, which start at noon in the PNC Triangle Park in front of the Fairmont Hotel. If you're looking for a bit more of a workout than strolling around the city, the YMCA will lead free exercises every Friday in the Square to get in you into summertime shape. From Spinning to Zumba to Pilates and Yoga, you'll find variety and a friendly atmosphere. Instead of taking time away from family before or after work, you can get ready for swim season on your lunch hour - buy fresh veggies on Thursday and meet up with the YMCA on Friday. If you had pastitsio instead of veggies, well, they'll take care of that too!

And just in case all this wasn't enough to fill your June calendar, the Market Square Merchants Association will host special events during lunch on Mondays and Wednesdays during the summer and some very cool "happy hour" happenings on Fridays. Get Away From It All... In the Square

Okay, we know that gas prices now are a real pain in the pump — especially with the summer travel season just around the corner. So if you canceled that family outing to the shore or cabin during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, we've got a budget-minded travel tip on a visit to one of the trendiest destinations around — Downtown Pittsburgh.

These days, just about any time you open a newspaper or magazine or turn on the TV or Internet, Pittsburgh is picking up another accolade, from the nation's most livable city to the safest place for pedestrians to get around town. And we couldn't agree more. Which is why we're posting a few ideas on how to plan a little Downtown Weekend Getaway — this weekend or any other.

Of course, we think every journey should start in this blog's favorite Downtown spot — Market Square. After you lace up those walking shoes, you might want to make a fast pit stop at Bruegger's Bagels or Dunkin Donuts to load up on the calories you'll need to burn as you discover the ins and outs of Downtown. And for some extra energy, stop by Nicholas Coffee and order one of their freshly brewed specialty java drinks. Now that your tank is full — at prices far below what OPEC charges — it's time to get this weekend jaunt on the road.

By now you know that the Square is the historic heart of the city. While we're talking about history, there's no better way to explore many of the city's wonders than on a self-guided Pittsburgh History & Landmarks walking tour or the Art In Public Places walk, sponsored by the Office of Public Art. Whatever direction you take, you'll discover some of the oldest buildings and the coolest art you'll find outside of a museum. In the case of inclemnet weather, stop into the Fort Pitt Museum at Point State Park. At only $5 you won't even miss the fuel perks!

With a chunk of art, architecture and history smarts under your belt, you might want to relax with a bit of a shopping spree. We suggest that you head back to where this all started, where you could spend nearly a whole day — and a little bit of cash — at the shops in and around the Square. From the oh-so-hip stylings at Serendipity to the well-heeled footware at the Nettleton Shop, the Square is fast becoming a shopper's oasis. For the coolest looks in sunglasses and other accessories, stop in at WEAR and Heinz-Healy's for casual men's wear. And just around the corner, on tony Fifth Avenue, there's even more at Larrimor's and the newly opened Joseph A. Banks stores.

If you don't know where to go or what to do, a weekend Downtown could seem long. Fortunately, you've got us as your secreate weapon! After all that shopping you might want to give your credit card a break, so why not enjoy the city from a different point of view. We think one of the best ways to make a splash Downtown is to dip your oar in one of Pittsburgh three rivers in a kayak. To put your best Lewis and Clark navigation skills to the test, Kayak Pittsburgh rents one and two person craft May through October. We certainly don't believe in corporal punishment, but this is one form of paddling that everyone deserves. If you're not looking to get your feet wet but still want to cruise the waterways, the Just Ducky and Gateway Clipper launch from Station Square, just across the Smithfield Street Bridge. For a unique view of why the three rivers make our city special, take a few moment to watch a special video produced by Riverlife.

With more than 25 miles of trails that follow the city's rivers, hiking, walking and biking have never been easier in Pittsburgh. With the opening of a new section of trail near the Convention Center, bikers can pedal from the McKees Rocks Bridge to the 40th Street Bridge to 21st Street in the Strip to the Steelers training facility near the SouthSide Works. With all the outdoor cafes throughout Downtown, you can roll up put a quick hurt on that hunger and keep rolling. And if you don't own a bike, you can rent a set of wheels at Golden Triangle Bike Rental, near the PNC Bank Firstside facility, just off Grant Street.

Just about now, it might be time to start thinking about a bite to eat. And, that means it's time to head back to the Square. Maybe you want to go old school with a hefty meal at the Oyster House or Primanti's. Of perhaps it's a spicy specialty from Chipotle or Moe's Southwest. For something a little more upscale, try Bella Sera, urban tratoria of the Canonsburg venue of the same name. And for some bon temps gourmet at NOLA, where the tastes of New Orleans flavor the menu. Or comfort food with a twist at Winghart's Burgers. Best of all, if the sun is shining, almost every eatery in the Square now offers al fresco dining. From Italian to All-American, there's something for every palette in the Square.

We like to think that the nighttime is the right time to be in the city. Well, we actually think anytime is a great time to be Downtown. But when the sun sets on the city, the highlights continue to shine. Whether it's a Broadway show at the Benedum, the world-class Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall, a stage play at the Public Theater or a jazz ensemble at the Fairmont Hotel, nightlife is certainly alive Downtown. If you want something more interactive, we've got salsa dancing every Friday and Saturday night. And keep in mind that the Bucs play ball all summer long at PNC Park, the best diamond any girl or guy could want. And just in case you need a spot to refuel after a big day in the city, Market Square is the perfect rest stop with a restaurants and bars for just about every taste. With so many hotels in walking distance (Fairmont, Renaissance, and Wyndham are the closest) you've never had such an easy time getting "home."

So if a "staycation" is on the books for you this summer, you can get away yard work, bills and all those everyday routines and be a tourist in your own hometown when you visit Downtown Pittsburgh.

Reading, Riding and Caring

Okay, maybe the marathon is over. But you still might want to run over to Market Square this week to catch up on a good read or two when the Carnegie Reading Room returns to open a new chapter on one of last year's most successful programs. In fact, the Reading Room cart will park itself in the Square every Tuesday this year — starting this week — instead of every other week. From May 17 (that's tomorrow, you know) until October 11, the Reading Room is the perfect place to release the inner bookworm in you from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.. It's also great for the lunch crowd that wants to lose itself in a good mystery or history book under one of the Square's trees while sipping sip a cool, refreshing beverage or munching on delectable edibles from one of the many fine eateries that surround the Square.

Now along with picking up a best-selling novel or can't-put-it-down self-help book, everything at the Reading Room is on sale for prices that are a bargain you won't find anywhere else in town at just a buck for hardcovers and paperbacks at only 50 cents. Best of all, every book you buy will help support one of Pittsburgh's greatest assets — the free Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh system. And if you're looking to clear some space on your home bookshelf for your new purchases, you can donate your previously read volumes to the Downtown Library on Smithfield Street so that other can enjoy them. Be sure to remember to bookmark this one for every Tuesday on your calendar.

One thing we can tell you is that people around here are ready to roll up their sleeves when it comes to helping out. If you've been looking for that perfect time and opportunity to give something back to the town you call home, stop by the Square Tuesday (same day as the Reading Room) to visit the Pittsburgh Cares staff. Starting today, they'll help you get involved in HandsOn Pittsburgh, a special two-day event this May 20 and 21 to pitch in with your time and talents with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and other area non-profits that are making the region even more livable for everyone. You can get involved individually or with a team of co-workers or friends and family. Either way, you'll being doing a good deed. On top of all that, you'll get a free T-shirt for participating and a special discounts at local restaurants. With those kind of incentives, this is one opportunity you'll want to get your hands on.

Get ready for a doubleheader this Wednesday, with two events sharing the Square. The Higher Education Information Fair might not have carnival rides, but if you're looking to increase your worth on the job market this might be the ticket for you. Hosted by CEA/PA, the Continuing Education Association of PA, the fair gives you the chance to speak one-on-one with admissions representatives from nearly 20 institutions of higher learning and discover how earning a degree or advanced degree can make you more attractive to potential employers.

Across the Square the United Way of Allegheny County and The Pittsburgh Foundation ask the question, "Why Cut What Works?" Starting at 11:30 a.m. Bob Nelkin, President and CEO of United Way and Grant Oliphant, President and CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation, along with other nonprofit and community leaders address spending cuts for nonprofits, especially those serving the human services sector. But these folks are thinking big picture, too, and to talk about "the social compact" – the idea that together we work to safeguard the well-being of communities for ALL citizens. It's a complicated topic so get out there, listen to all sides of the debate and become part of the conversation. After all, that's what a town square like Market Square is for!

Anyone who's paying attention knows that the price of a gallon of gas is soaring and burning a big hole in your pocket. One of the cheapest — and healthiest — alternatives to the budget-busting cost of fuel is to pedal your way to work Downtown. And since this is National Bike to Work Week, there's no better time to get rolling. Just in case you're wondering, both Bicycling magazine and the League of American Bicyclists named our favorite city one of the most bike friendly towns in the U.S.A.

If you're looking to plan your ride route, you can get a downloadable trail map from the good folks at Bike Pittsburgh, who also offer a few tips about commuting to and from your job and biking around town in general. You might be surprised to find out that along with an extensive network of well-maintained trails up and down the three rivers, there are more than 25 miles of designated bike lanes on city streets. What's that you say? You don't have a bike. Well, just about wherever you look these days in the city, another new cycle shop seems to be opening for business. So there's no shortage of options for getting yourself a new set of wheels. If you're not sure about spending a few hundred dollars for a new two-wheeler, Golden Triangle Bike Rentals is the place to go for a test ride or two. Finally, you'll not only save gas money, bike parking in many Downtown garages costs less than a can of soda from the lunchroom vending machine — and you might just be eligible for a commuter tax break from Uncle Sam. That's what we call a wheel deal.

If you've been keeping current on your Market Square blog reading, you know that the Square once was better known as "The Diamond." Well, this coming Saturday — May 21, to be exact — one lucky person will take home a real diamond during the 2nd Annual Henne Jeweler's Diamond Dash. The Farmers Market Returns

Just in case you don't have May 12 — that's tomorrow, by the way — circled on your calendar, now's the time to grab that Sharpie and make a few rings around the date. That just happens to be the day that the Farmers Market returns to Market Square and the kickoff of our Thursdays in Market Square events. Now, we all know it's been a long, cool wet spring. But every time we stroll around the Market in the Square, we feel like we're walking on sunshine every Thursday from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. until November.

Of course, a lot of perennial favorites will set up tables and shop their wares tomorrow. It's kind of like getting back together with old friends or a high school reunion. We know that there are plenty of old acquaintances that we're looking forward to renewing — and getting to know even better in the weeks ahead. And if you look at the list below, you'll probably notice a smile stretching across your face as you spot a few of your favorite vendors:

• Sand Hill Berries — Stop by for some of the tastiest fruit pies in town, or fruits to make your own

• Greendance Winery — Take home a perfect bottle of vino for sipping with dinner
• Cinco de Mayo — It's always hot, hot, hot with these homemade salsas and prepared vegetables
• Gosia's Pierogies — Pittsburgh's favorite food in a pouch, ready to eat in the Square or to make at home

And as much as we love all our old friends, we're always excited about introducing new faces in the Square. This year's crop of newcomers includes:

• Clarion River Organics — Stop by and say hello to a cooperative of six farming families selling organic produce, meats, dairy, grains and kombucha, a fermented homemade herbal tea

Keep your eyes open for other new additions to the Farmers Market, such as an on-site market manager to help keep things going smoothly, samplings from local chefs, seasonal recipes and some social media fun happenings.

Speaking of fun, City Paper is bringing you Thursdays Noontime Concerts take the stage again, starting in June. We think this year's lineup of musical talent will strike the perfect chord as you dance to the music all summer long in the Square.

Market Square — Then and Now

Just about every time we step into Market Square, it's like taking a time machine trip back to the earliest days of Pittsburgh. Maybe it's the Belgian block that paved the way for the city's first "modern" streets. Or maybe it's the fried-fish aroma wafting from the Square's oldest business Original Oyster House. And you could just say that it's the wide-open plaza of the "new" Square that hearkens to the original design of the space old-time Pittsburghers called "The Diamond" because its of its orientation to the four compass points. But the truth is, just about whatever direction you cast a glance, you're looking at a building linked to the city's past. And to show you what we mean, we put together a mini-photo album of "then and now" images of the Square not-so recent bygone days.

You don't have to be a historian to recognize the familiar name in the photo above. When that black-and-white shot was snapped nearly 50 years ago, Nicholas Coffee was freshly roasting the beans that helped perk up the morning for drowsy Downtown workers as they started another day at the office. Of course, a half-century can make a difference in any building's appearance. But if you check out the image to the right, we think you'll agree that the Square's favorite purveyor of coffee and tea looks pretty good with its Chippendale makeover in place of the building's 1940s decor. And we're willing to bet that Deifbaugh's Cafe served up some hearty old-time fare, but NOLA definitely adds some new spice to the Square with its bon temps roulet infused New Orleans style cuisine.

Now, if you execute a 180-degree spin, you'll be facing the corner of the-soon-to-be reopened Las Velas Mexican cantina and an under-construction new restaurant owned by the Primanti's proprietors. We love the all-glass facade of the upper floor of the building. And we have it on good word that the ground-level restaurant will provide an open-air atmosphere that will help bring the Square right into the dining area. If you peer down Market toward Fifth Avenue, you can see the front of Prantl's and Mancini's new location, the freshly renovated blue and cream terra cotta Buhl Building and the luxe Fairmont Hotel. It's a diverse group, indeed.

But turn back the clock and that same stretch of street mixed up produce and poultry with jewelry and fancy footwear. Whether it was fresh fruit or a perfectly plucked chicken, this corner of commerce enjoyed a steady stream of potential customers looking for something to put on the dinner table. On the other hand, a different clientele might be looking to impress a certain special woman in his life with a sparkling bauble or two and maybe a new pair of shoes for himself. Coincidentally, the Nettleton Shop sits across the street today, selling some of the finest shoes around. Some things don't change all that much.

Our trip down memory lane takes a southern detour as we head to the spot where McMasters Way and Forbes Avenue meet. These days, if you look past Moe's Southwest, you'll spy Winghart's Burger and Whisky Bar, La Gondola pizzeria, Subway and Primanti's. But if you stood on that same corner in the early 1960s — a few years after the demolition of the market house that occupied what's now the Square's terrazzo plaza — the view would be a bit different, at least on the surface.

Back in 1962, a variety of business operated at street level of the Civil War era building that now houses Primanti's. Aside from a roof job and a new coat of paint, the former warehouse looks just about the same today. We can't say for sure, but we think the front of Bubble's Bar pretty much did double duty as the establishment's large-print menu for it's near-sighted patrons. And you don't have to be a surveyor to figure out that the Square's sidewalks had to be smaller back then. How else could you park cars on both sides of the street? And eagle-eyed readers will note that the upper right corner reveals a few structures that are long gone. But the PPG Place complex is welcome addition that will be around for a few years.

What makes for a truly amazing history walk is that so many of the buildings around the Square can trace their roots as far back as the 1860s. Which means that the past is always present when you're in Market Square.

The More The Merrier In The Square

The countdown is on. That's right, just 2 1/2 more days until the Merry Month of May blossoms in Market Square — and we're not just talking about the lovely daffodils and other fantastic flowers planted around the Square by the wonderful Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, who are all joyfully green thumbs. The blooms we're waiting for are the many perennial events that will open in the Square during May. In fact, the Square events calendar is just about ready to burst with the weekly Farmers' Market, the Carnegie Library Reading Room and other welcome favorites. So, until we turn the calendar page to May, we're giving you a bit of a sneak peek.

Now during just the very first week of the fifth month of the year on the fifth day of May, we'll all be taking a virtual trip South of the Border for Cinco de Mayo, a festive celebration of Mexico's victory over the French army in 1862. Instead of battlefield recreations, you'll enjoy some muy caliente cuisine at one of the Square's Mexican style eateries, such as Moe's Southwest Grill or Chipotle — even Bruegger's will be serving a spicy jalapeno bagel and Southwest breakfast sandwich. And, though they won't be ready for Cinco, Las Velas is scheduled to open its doors very, very soon. Watch this space for more news about this much anticipated return on the Square.

No other event in the Square attracts as many people as the weekly Farmers Market. After all, it's hard to resist the tasty temptation of fresh from the field goodies delivered right to the heart of Downtown. Along with nature's best veggies and fruits, the Farmers' Market serves up hot lunches, desserts, flowers and more treats. The Market sets up every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting May 12. Let's just say that we're planting a seed so that you don't forget about this popular attraction.

You could say that May really gets off and running when the starting gun goes off for the beginning of the Pittsburgh Marathon. If you're in the running, then you already know that you'll need to have your Nikes laced up and ready to go at the starting line, which just happens to be at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Sixth Street at 7 a.m. this year. One of nation's top long-distance races, the 26.2-mile course winds its way all over the city, across three rivers and up and down more than a few hills before coming to an end near Heinz Field on the North Side. For those watching the race, Downtown is the perfect spot for viewing. The full and half marathons cross through Downtown several times and while waiting for runners to loop back, what better place than Downtown to grab a coffee or other breakfast treat? A quick walk over to the Northside and you're at the finish line celebration!

Of course, there's more than fun and games to what goes on in the Square. This al fresco library pitches its tent in the Square this year, with a surprise twist. Instead of last year's every other week schedule, the Reading Room is open for business in the Square every Tuesday this year from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. You also can purchase the volumes of your choice — paperbacks 50 cents, hardcovers $1— and the proceeds help support the library system.

Everyone knows that all roads lead to Market Square — well, at least we think they do. But did you know that many of the region's urban trails actually do take you to Downtown? Well, there's no better time than N ational Bike to Work Day to put your mettle to the pedal and spin your two-wheeler to Market Square to support the most fuel-efficient form of transportation around. We're looking forward to seeing more folk pedaling around town — but don't forget your helmet!

Keeping the Faith in Lunch

This week two of the world's major religions mark major holy days during Passover and the last week of Lent leading up to Easter. And while followers observe the end of each period with bountiful feasts with families and friends, many of the faithful follow strict dietary restrictions until then. Now even if most of the culinary delights in the Square aren't exactly Kosher, there are plenty of dietary choices for true believers looking for a midday or afterwork bite to eat.

For starters, salads in the Square certainly don't break any culinary commandments. And good grazing abounds around the Square, from Moe's Southwest and Chipotle to NOLA and Fat Tommy's. For a heartier non-meat alternative, plant yourself in front of a Wingheart's Beretta Veggie Burger — a juicy portabella mushroom topped with spinach, arugula, artichoke spread and lots of other garden goodies. For those seeking the unleavened, let your burrito go naked without a tortilla, or the NOLA salad is a refreshing change with sweet potato chips and the option to add blackened redfish on top.

Of course, during this special week, many believers give up a little more than usual as a sign of devotion. If fasting is part of your religious menu, you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover that many of the Square's eateries are ready to serve made to order smaller portions. Now, most days at the Original Oyster House, it seems that the miracle of the loaves and fishes is on constant replay. However, the Square's oldest restaurant also dishes out a mini-fish sandwich. And if that's pushing the limit, a breaded oyster or two should help keep the observant within the gustatory guidelines. For even lighter fare, the vegetarian and fish soups at Bella Sera, NOLA or Bruegger's will do, or pick a basic flatbread from the menu at Dunkin Donuts. And for the real saints in the crowd, a single fish taco from Moe's might even push the limits!

Now, all this fasting can be a bit taxing. But now that we can all quit thinking about the IRS, why not not take a spring shopping break at the many shops in and around the Square? With the warmer weather here to stay, we're seeing more and more Dapper Dans dashing around town. Which means there's no better time to give your feet a treat with a new pair of kicks from the Nettleton Shoes. Put that tax refund to good use! And why not top off that head to toe makeover with a sporty chapeau from Heinz Healy's. Even if Pittsburgh doesn't have an Easter parade, ladies, there's no reason why you can't stroll down Fifth Avenue in a fabulous little print dress from Larrimor's, which can be nicely accessorized with up-to-the-minute handbags and jewelry from Serendipity and an oh-so-cool pair of shades from WEAR in the Square.

However you might count your blessings at this special time of the year, we're sure you'll find a way to keep the faith in the Square.

The Square Route to Freedom

These days, you don't need to rely on the North Star to chart a course to Market Square. But in the years before the Civil War erupted 150 years ago between the North and South, runaway slaves looked to the heavens above to find their way to the North on the Underground Railroad. Which is why Mayor Luke Ravenstahl led other dignitaries in the Square to unveil a commemorative plaque honoring Pittsburgh's proud past in helping African-American citizens escape bondage and live as free men and women.

Now, even though we're going to mix a little astronomy and history here for a moment or two, you don't need to worry since there's no test at the end. Still, we really want to invite everyone who visits the Square to take a moment or two to see the plaque — and the special LED Big and Little Dippers embedded in the center of the Square— to understand and appreciate the courage of African Americans seeking their freedom and the many brave Pittsburghers who helped them on their way.

Okay, if you want to spot the North Star, all you have to do is stand at the plaque and tilt your head back a bit and peer into the skies just over the roof of the Camera Repair Service building. Yes, it works a whole lot better if you try this after dark. Now, the North Star is always in the same spot in the sky (polar North) and the other stars in the constellations rotate around it through the night. The lights in the ground are arranged as the stars would have been seen at 8pm on June 2, 1835. The sun is setting later and later now that spring has sprung, but you might catch a glimmer at 8pm. The 8pm arrangement honors the first recorded meeting of the Pittsburgh Anti-Slavery Society. Although there were plenty of abolitionist activites in the Burgh before that date this meeting was actually advertised in the newspaper as an organized and public meeting — more than a quarter of a century before the first cannon shot fired at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina set off the War Between The States. Incidentally, this week marks the 150th anniversary of that first shot. The rebels opened fire on Fort Sumter on April 12 at 4:30am. Today, April 14, marks the day the first union soldier died.

Of course, we like to think we're near know-it-alls when it comes to the Square's storied past. But we know when to make way for the professionals... Dr. Kimberly Ellis — she's the executive director of the Historic Hill Institute — mentioned that business owners and waiters in and around the Square often hid runaway slaves during their passage through the city. And did you know that in 1850 about 75 percent of the city's African American citizens lived beside white neighbors? Well, you can learn this and more on one of theHistoric Hill Institute's two Underground Railroad tours.

At a spry 97-years-old, Virginia O'Connor still can't get enough of the City she loves. Collecting, recording and researching since her birth in 1914, it was Virginia who brought about the deeper investigation into Market Square's history with the Underground Railroad when she sent some unique documents to the renovation team - information that did not exist in record anywhere else. You could say that Virginia O'Connor really did her homework when it comes to Pittsburgh's role in the Underground Railroad. With a dedication and determination that would outshine people a quarter of her age, Virgina's commitment to the cause is truly a reason to celebrate. Special thanks to the team of historians that verified and supplemented the information from Virginia, Dr. Laurence Glasco, John L. Ford (seen in the photo above), Dr. Kimberly Ellis (also in the above photo), and Terri Blanchette.

Along with honoring the city's strong role as a hot bed of abolition activity, the gathering also officially opened the al fresco dining and fun season in the Square. On hand to help the mayor usher in the festivities were PDP board chair Rich Beynon, Lloyd Wright of Sen. Ferlo's office, representatives from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, John Rohe of Colcom Foundation, Zach Winghart of Winghart's Burger and Whiskey Bar, developer Lucas Piatt, Bella Sera chef Jason Capps other Square business owners and regulars.

On that day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia. The Act freed about 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia nine months before President Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation. The District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act represents the only example of compensation by the federal government to former owners of emancipated slaves.

It's Opening Day In Market Square

You can take us out to the ballgame at PNC Park, where the ump yells "Play Ball" at 1:35 p.m. Thursday for the first game of the 2011 baseball season as the Buccos take the diamond in America's best ballpark. But we'll also be catching the first pitch of the Downtown Season Opener when Mayor Luke Ravenstahl officially inaugurates the 2011 Outdoor Season at 10 a.m. in the center of another historic diamond — Market Square.

Now if you've been paying attention — and we know you do — you've noticed that tables and chairs have been popping up the past week in the Square like daffodils in your backyard. And speaking of daffodils, everyone's favorite buttercups are adding a little bit of sunshine throughout planters in the Square, thanks to the green thumb folks of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

Of course, we encourage everyone to have as much fun as possible just about anytime they visit the Square, especially now that more outdoor activities are on the schedule. But did you know that there's a serious side to the Square, as well? History buffs will want to get on track to learn more about the Square's role in the Underground Railroad, the secret network of land routes and safe houses that helped runaway slaves escape bondage below the Mason-Dixon line. Check out the Big and Little Dipper lighting display —and a brand new historical plaque — in the middle of the Square. Check out next week's blog post for more on that...

Warmer weather also signals the start of the al fresco dining season in the Square. Actually, we've already spotted more than a few hardy and hungry souls enjoying their lunches in the Square. But as the temps climb — and more tables and chairs appear — the Square will be the place to feast upon the many taste temptations that surround the terrazzo plaza. And we're more than willing to admit that we've been around the block quite a few times or two, sampling the diversity of cuisines found in the Square.

Back to baseball, keep in mind that the Pirates schedule gives you 81 good reasons to visit the Square before and after games for pre- and post-games snacks and beverages. Plus, parking in Downtown for most home evening and weekend home games is one of the best bargains around, since most garages post a $5 flat rate. So even if there are extra innings, there's never an extra charge.

Of course, one of the best ways to beat the traffic and parking concerns is to pedal on down to the Square. With more and more publications ranking Pittsburgh as one of the bike-friendliest and accessible cities in the U.S.A., you can freewheel to the Square and lock up your ride for free on any of the many artsy bike racks on the perimeter. There's no better time of year than now to keep those big wheels rolling.

Now everyone knows that diamonds are a Square's best friend, which is why our Market Square will soon be sporting some sparkling gems created by artist Carin Mincemoyer. Carin's electrifying Diamond, Diamonds installation of 80 glass "diamonds" gently powered by energy-saving LED lights will hang from two lamp posts at the Square's entrance on Market Street. Look for them later this spring. We've been saying this for a while now, but it's truer than ever — this really is the Square's time to shine.

Save The Square Dates — Now!

Okay, so maybe its cold and wet as we write this. But we're sticking with the idea that it really is springtime in Downtown. Especially when we check the PDP events calendar for all the happenings in Market Square — and all over Downtown — during April with even more in store for May, June, July and August when the city really heats up with great entertainment, fabulous food and so much more. The City is in busy-mode approving permits for all the public spaces in Pittsburgh and the renovated Market Square is no slacker on that front. It has really been embraced by local organizations, whether holding their first events in the Square or the annual return.

We really don't care if March is roaring out like a lion instead of whimpering like a lamb. That's because we're ready to paint the town red, white, green and just about every other color when PPG Pittsburgh Paints attempts to set the record for the world's largest paint swatch on April 1 (no fooling!) from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.. With a totally official judge from the Guinness World Record Book on hand to monitor the event, PPG will show how easy it is be to green with a 4 by 17 foot swatch in grassy hues. After the record setting event, the swatch will move to Two PPG Place, where it will be repainted various colors throughout the year based on popular public vote. Onlookers at this historic event will take home a free paint sample and discount coupons for PPG paints.

Spring is a great time to take a stroll around town. And it's even better when there's a great reason for putting your feet on the street. This year on April 10, Market Square is an official rest stop on the annual Walk MS fundraiser. Now maybe you're feeling a little bit rusty after a long winter layover. That's why the walk offers two options — a one-mile course and a 5k jaunt, which is just a little over three miles. Either way, the walk is an incredibly powerful way to join the movement to beat this disease that attacks the nervous system. To register, visit the MS Walk website today for more info and let your feet do the talking in the battle against MS.

Fair is fair and that's why the Women and Girls Foundation is once again sponsoring the Equal Pay Day Rally in the Square on April 12. This square deal event stresses that women deserve to be paid the same as their male colleagues who do the same type of work. Starting at noon, the rally will address the issue of just how far women need to go to reach parity on the pay scale with men.

The topic brewing during the April 15 Tea Party Rally in the Square will be "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs." Party supporters certainly will bring a critical mass to the scene, as a speaker is set to talk about economic opportunities created by the Marcellus shale seam throughout much of the northeast. And just a reminder, even though April 15 is the traditional deadline for filing taxes, this year's date is April 18. Now who says the IRS doesn't have a heart?

Speaking of hearts, do you know that coronary disease is the leading cause of death among women? It's true. According to the American Heart Association, five times as many women die of heart attacks than from breast cancer. On April 19, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the Go Red for Women Mission Rally will create a greater awareness among women about the realities of heart disease with a lunchtime demonstration of nutrition tips, exercise suggestions and free heart screenings. Sure this is serious business. But there will entertainment and a chance to win a gift certificate valued at $500. Now that's something you can take to heart.

For most of us, paper cuts and sore backs are the worst work related injuries we'll ever suffer. But some workers face much more serious dangers. During the region's industrial past as well as over the past year many workers have paid the ultimate price in the workplace, making civilized life possible. On April 26, from noon-1p.m., the AFL-CIO and Allegheny County Labor Council pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the workplace.

On the radio, Tunch and Wolf — that's former Steelers Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley — enliven gameday broadcast with their often humorous sideline insights. But these ex-NFLers have a serious side away from the gridiron as they help turn around the lives of the homeless. To preview their Walk for the Homeless, Tunch and Wolf will hold a mini-walk for local media April 20 with a stop in Market Square to present the Locker Room Leadership Award. You can step up, too, for this event and pace yourself around the Square.

Let The Good Times Roll In The Square

Maybe you don't know what it means to miss New Orleans. But once you sample the Po' Boys, Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice at NOLA On The Square, you'll understand why Louis Armstrong sang the homesick blues about the Big Easy. Looking to spice up the Square with a taste of the Crescent City, owner Yves Carreau — who just happens to own the Sonoma Grille and Serviche on Penn Avenue — calls the French accented fare at NOLA "Nouveau Creole." Even if you don't parlez francais, NOLA will leave you saying "oo la la."

Happily housed in the old 1902 Building, next to Nicholas Coffee, NOLA paints a colorful new face on the old structure. Once you step inside, every day seems like Fat Tuesday. On the walls, trompe l'oiel murals capture the spirit of Mardi Gras with bejeweled masked ladies, floats and jesters marching down Bourbon Street as revelers gaze down from balconies. And the festive art throughout sets the tone for the real reason for coming — music, drinks and, of course, food!

Now if you trust your nose, follow the aroma to the open kitchen at the back of the building. Sure, it's okay to stop along the way at the bar to sample a Voodoo Doll, Hurricane, Le Bon Temps Roule or any of the other Bourbon Street inspired cocktails. Once your thirst is satisfied, check out executive chef Andrew Hebson and his culinary krewe in action as they whip up Pasta Pontchartrain, Poulet Frites et Salade Verte, Shrimp and Grits and other New-Orleans infused specialities. If you're searching for entertainment in the Square, the food prep action at NOLA is just the start.

We're pleased to say that NOLA is bringing back the sound of music to the Square with live bands performing at least two nights a week. Of course, the emphasis will be on jazz, blues and other tunes connected to the city that sits along the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Be there for the first live performance tomorrow night, Wednesday, March 23rd at 8pm or or check their events calendar for upcoming performances. If you need a little bit more of a nudge to join the saints as they go marching in the Square, we should mention that diners can drop off their autos at no charge thanks to NOLA's complimentary valet service. Which means it won't cost you a pocketful of quarters to enjoy French Quarter cuisine.

As Market Square burnishes its already glowing reputation as one of the city's hottest meet, greet and eat dining destinations, NOLA turns up the heat. And speaking of heat, NOLA will provide outdoor cafe style seating as the weather warms in the weeks ahead, adding another entree to the city's Paris to Pittsburgh menu of al fresco dining. But why wait for summer? Roll on in to the Square and laissez le bons temps rouler at NOLA.

Fat Tommy's New Look

We think the grand reopening of Fat Tommy's Pizza is an easy slam dunk. With the Pitt basketball team starting its annual run at the NCAA March Madness title, this hometown pizzeria wrapped up its recent makeover just in time for the opening tip. And one of the best new toppings on Tommy's revamped pizza palace is a full service bar with two wide screen HD TVs. Now we're not recommending that anyone plays a little hooky, but this new watering hole is perfect for catching the Panthers on the prowl with their game this Thursday afternoon.

On the other hand, if you're prowling for a perfect pizza slice, Tommy's is a good start. Chances are that if you stop by the location on lower Forbes Ave during lunch, you'll catch Tommy in the middle of twirling a floppy disc of dough and yelling out orders to the staff that seems to be running a race that never ends.

Now aside from the pizza and shop's namesake, just about everything inside is new — from the tile floors to tables and brighter lights and logo. Even the menu got a makeover. Sure, you'll find pizza of just about every type and plenty of sandwiches, salads and sides. And as the weather warms up, Tommy will add pasta dishes for lunch and dinner. Did we mention that he'll keep the ovens fired up and working Monday through Saturday until 9 p.m. most nights?

Tommy tells us that the temps rise, he'll bring out tables for some pizza and pasta al fresco. We think pizza's just about perfect anytime time of year, but savoring a steaming slice in summertime with a cold brew is almost heaven. And Tommy's summertime dining experience will include happy hour beverage specials for a growing afterwork crowd that's staying longer Downtown to enjoy that Pittsburgh to Paris cafe life and avoid the hassles and headaches of rush hour traffic. So whether you're checking the score of the game or just looking for a slice with pepperoni to go, Fat Tommy's is back.

A Square Catch of the Day

Now that Fat Tuesday's over, we're here to give you the skinny on meat-free dining options in the Square for the next few weeks. Of course, if fish is your favorite dish to begin with you've got no beef — or chicken or pork, for that matter — with surfing the Square to net the catch of the day at any one of the scene's dining spots. But for you carnivores, we're here to help you navigate the Square's culinary waters.

Okay, when you start talking about fish sandwiches and other deep-sea treats, you've got to start with the Original Oyster House. Almost as old as King Neptune himself, the Oyster House dropped anchor in the Square just about 140 years ago. If you can fathom that, then you'll want to visit this genuine historic landmark for a heaping helping of breaded fish sandwiches or oysters, some creamy slaw, a cold draft and a real taste of Pittsburgh's past.

Sailing along, Mancini's beckons with a couple of meatless specialities such as the spinach feta roll and a spinach, feta and egg sandwich. Of course, Prantl's shares the same sweet space, so you might have to resist some of the treats you promised to give up until after Easter. Then again, as Oscar Wilde once spouted, the best way to beat temptation is to give in to it.

Our next port of call on this voyage around the Square is A & J Ribs. If you're expecting to find a meaty menu at a rib joint, you'd be right on target. But A & J's serves up a fish sandwich that will satisfy the appetite of the heartiest beef eater. Plus, with a ton of sides like homemade mac and cheese and collard greens, there's plenty to choose that doesn't roam the earth on two or four feet.

If the bounty of the harvest is your palate pleaser, Bella Sera, that cozy urban trattoria, serves up a feast of pasta dishes. Pasta Bella dishes out penne with farm-fresh pesto, onion and roasted red peppers sauteed in olive oil. Of course, there's a fish sandwich on the menu that can be ordered fried or grilled. And the focaccia sandwich satisfies with fresh mozzarella, grilled eggplant, roma tomato and farm-fresh pesto. Don't forget to check out the drink menu with a pleasing selection of specialty cocktail, wines and microbrews. They help any meal go down just a little easier.

In case you didn't make it to Mardi Gras, NOLA on the Square opens later this month with a menu heavy on culinary treasures from Louisiana's Crescent City. For authentic bayou flavor, Pasta Pontchartrain is swimming with spicy crayfish, artichokes and other fiery ingredients. Of course, there's the traditional Po' Boy — a wonderfully over-stuffed sandwich filled with Abita beer-battered oysters, spicy Cajun slaw and sun-dried pepper remoulade. Check back here in a couple weeks for more info on the grand opening.

As we continue to ride this food wave, it's on to Bruegger's, where the speciality sandwiches include the Leonardo da Veggie, an artsy masterpiece of light-herb garlic cream cheese, roasted red peppers, muenster cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion. Next door, Dunkin Donuts punches holes in the idea that you can only find round pieces of fried dough in a donut shop. Turns out the lunch menu here includes flat bread sandwiches such as the egg-white veggie and grilled cheese.

Around the corner, Fat Tommy's will open again very soon, ready to ply pizza pies topped with spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, spices and cheeses. Did you notice we didn't mention any meats? If you're searching for something more than a slice or two of FT's specialty, you might want to try a veggie calzone, sub or wrap. Or you might just order the tuna salad. One thing's for sure, Tommy's gives you almost as many choices as they give you pepperoni...uh, we meant peppers... on a large pie.

Another landmark looms in the shape of Primanti's. Yeah, the cheesesteaks here are way beyond "almost famous." Seems like any time you turn on a cable channel devoted to food, the host is chomping away at a mighty mountain of meat, fries, slaw, cheese, egg and tomato between two thick slabs of Mancini's Italian bread. But the "Colossal Fish Sandwich" is a whale of a deal, too.

At Subway, the Veggie Delite is a crunchy combo of garden fresh lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, onions and condiments on fresh baked bread. A short oar stroke away is La Gondola, where the pies and baked sandwiches feature plenty of veggie and no-meat choices.

No one will be surprised that fish of any type is a no show on the menu at Winghart's Burger & Whiskey Bar. Not to worry, though. Along with a house-made totally veggie burger, the wood oven pizzas include freshly tossed pies topped with veggies and cheeses of all sorts. And there's always the super salads too.

At the corner of Market and Forbes, Moe's Southwest Grill twists the traditional fish dish into the shape of a taco. The southwest dining accent here puts grilled lemon pepper tilapia in a shell filled with fresh pico de gallo, slaw and chipotle ranch dressing. And just about any of the burritos, fajitas and south of the border eats here can be ordered as beans-only or tofu.

Let's skip across Forbes, to another hot spot with a southwestern flavor. Still pretty much a newcomer to the Square, Chipotle Mexican Grill needs no introduction to fans of its "food with integrity." With a menu that's long on options, one choice is to hold the meat.

Finally, we're almost back to square one at DiBella's. As the newest kid on the Square, it's just a sideways walk across McMasters Way to the oldest joint in town — the Oyster House. But DiBella's tin ceilings and tile floors will have you believing it's been in the Square forever. What makes these old-fashioned subs float, for the most part, is the choice of ham, roast beef, salami and other meats. But the signature tuna salad sub and its veggie counterpart are high watermark alternatives.

New Sub Shop Surfaces In The Square

It was deja vu all over again. That's the feeling that hit us as soon as we walked through the doors of DiBella's Old Fashioned Submarines shop. Even though Market Square's newest eatery will open for business to the public tomorrow — that's Thursday, by the way — this super sandwich joint feels like it's been around for ever. Tucked into a corner of what was once the old "New Diamond Market," DiBella's has a vintage Pittsburgh look with its tin ceilings, tile floors and dark wood paneling that makes it look like it's been on the Square since the days when the city spelled its name without the "h" on the end. Which was way before people could Google, text, tweet or even LOL.

Anyway, it was all smiles as a VIP crowd of hungry lunchtime diners lined up at one of the city's longest counters in town to taste test a fleet of subs piled high with salami, capicola, corned beef, ham, turkey and other choice cuts of meats — stacked on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, spicy and sweet peppers, onions and others add-ons. Now, our theory is that the secret of a great sandwich isn't always what you put between two slices of bread — it's the bread. And thanks to DiBella's on-site bakery, the oven-fresh sesame, multigrain, plain and everything rolls have the right stuff.

Because we believe that the voice of the people is the best word of mouth, we conducted a little survey. Of course, our results are more gastronomic than scientific. But the early polling shows that DiBella's got plenty of thumbs up from the preview party. In fact, we heard more than a few people say that they would be back for more on opening day this Thursday, March 3. Now we're going to let you in on a little secret that might get you to show up a little earlier than your usual lunch time. We're sharing the inside scoop that the first ten paying customers on Thursday will receive 52 coupons for a free sub. We'll do that math for you on this one. That works out to one free sandwich each week for a year — or about 8 a day for one week if you're really hungry.

We do have to issue a "heads up" hunger alert here. These subs are hefty, even for the "small" size, which measures in at seven inches long. By itself, this mighty mite is a pretty big bite. Our bellies were happy way past dinner time. But the large number is whopping 14 inches, enough for two people to share for maybe a couple of days. Fortunately, DiBella's is open for business seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. That's enough time to finish any size sub in one sitting. If the sandwiches don't quite top off your appetite, the menu includes signature salads, macaroni, deli pickles, and other sides. For the super serious eaters, Grandma DiBella's chocolate chip cookies are the perfect ending.

Like we said, DiBella's really seems like a longtime fixture on the Square. The nostalgic touches are so authentic that you can almost hear the town crier and clip-clop of horseshoes echoing off the Belgian block streets outside. Yet, the shop in the Square is the company's first urban store. Up till now, you'd most likely find DiBella's in a suburban location. After doing a lot of homework, they decided to test the waters right here in Downtown. From the smiling faces we saw there, we think it's going to be a square deal all around.

The Emerald Square

Irish eyes will be smiling around the Square this St. Paddy's Day when all of Pittsburgh goes green on March 12 to celebrate the Emerald Isle's favorite son. Especially since this year's parade — the biggest march between New York City and Chicago — will kick off what event organizers are calling a "New School St. Patrick's Day" with a special "Family Friendly" zone in the Square from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Now we think the Square is family friendly just about anytime of the day. But just to make sure that parents and their wee ones can search for lucky shamrock cookies and ribbeting frog cakes at Prantl's and yummy green icing donuts at Dunkin Donuts, the center of the Square will be an alcohol-free zone from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Along with tasty treats, many parade performers will bring their acts to the Square to entertain all the little sons and daughters of Erin.

Parade organizers partnered with city officials and the many merchants in the Square to add a little more structure — and a lot more fun — to this year's parade and post-parade activities. So while the youngsters enjoy themselves in the Square in the morning and early afternoon, the grownups can join the party from 2-6 p.m. when the fun gets a little more "spirited" as local country rockers the Stickers take to the stage. We can't promise that they'll sing "Danny Boy" with a twang, but these slick guitar pickers will have the crowd doing their own version of a river dance. Sponsored by Coors Light, the Pickers show will be just one of the attractions in the Square.

Of course, a big part of any event in the Square is just being there — and enjoying the sights and sounds. But we want to make sure you enjoy some of the many tastes of the Square. If dancing a jig or two works up an appetite and a thirst, there are plenty of choices in the Square to satisfy both.

Already a big favorite, Square newcomer Winghart's Burger & Whiskey Bar recently was voted one of the top three hamburger joints in the Burgh by discerning diners in a WPXI poll. Traditionalists might favor a sky-high sandwich from Primanti's or the catch of the day at the Oyster House. For a bit of south of the border flavor, Moe's Southwest and Chipotle serve up some of the best Mexican flavored dishes around. And for a to-die-for pie, La Gondola will serve you up a little slice of heaven. When it comes to food for the soul, A&J Ribs is always finger lickin' good. For some Old World goodness and New World brews, check out the Italian eats and microbrews at Bella Sera. For some super subs and salads, drop in at DiBella's Old Fashioned Subs, one of the newest eatery's on the block. By the way, don't forget the bounty of bagel eats at Bruegger's. And if you need a bit of a pick me up, order a cup of caffeinated joe or frothy latte from Nicholas Brothers, which will serving until 2 p.m.

We ♥ Winghart's Burger & Whiskey Bar

Most times we don't find ourselves agreeing with TV's favorite animated dad. But when it comes to the All-American, USDA patties at Winghart's Burger & Whiskey Bar in Market Square, we got no beef with Homer's extraordinarily exquisite ’toon taste. And judging by the people lined up out the doors and into the Square during lunchtime yesterday, plenty of Pittsburghers second the emotion.

Just five weeks after opening its doors, Winghart's specialty burghers are reaching cult status in Downtown and beyond with rave reviews online and from the Post-Gazette's own mystery diner — Munch. Of course, to stand out among the tough gustatory competition in the Square, the burghers at Winghart's are anything but wimpy. Which is why owner Zach Winghart grinds premium chuck steak on site every day. Classically trained right here in town at the Culinary institute, Zach is also is a certified butcher. So every cut of meat that ends up between a bun is choice. Just ask Branko Kapusta.

Between bulging bites of a Shipwreck Burgher — a combo of melted brie, arugula, bacon, white truffle aioli and caramelized onions — Branko, whose name sounds like "bronco," told us that "this burger beats the heck out of ___," well, you can fill in the blank. On break from his job at PPG, Branko's been keeping his eye on Winghart's, which is tucked between Starbucks and La Gondola Pizzeria, during construction the past few months. With an appetite pumped up by a hard day at the office and the balmy temps, Branko ventured into Winghart's for his first visit — and it won't be the last. "I'll definitely be back again to try to the brick oven pizzas."

That's right. Along with a half-dozen specialty burghers with names like the Denny Double Blue, named after Zach's dad and generously drizzled with bleu cheese dressing and dry bleu cheese, and our favorite, the Market Square, a mouth-watering concoction of bacon, mushrooms and Gruyere cheese, the menu features six hardwood baked pies hand-tossed at counter side. And then there are the salads, soups and sides. Speaking of sides, every burger at Winghart's tastes even better with a hefty order of fresh-cut fries that undergo a secret multi-step preparation process before they sizzle to perfection in the fryer.

Okay, we really don't like to see anyone crying in Market Square — unless there's a wedding in the works — so for all those non-carnivores out there, the Beretta Veggie special serves up a portobello falafel patty smothered with spinach artichoke spread, roasted red peppers, arugula, olives and feta cheese. Best of all, it's hefty enough for two to graze on.

As for the second half of this jumping burger joint's name, the whiskey — plus ten beers on tap — is on hold while Winghart's awaits approval of its liquor license, which hopefully will arrive in time for St. Paddy's Day. When the whiskey and beer start flowing, Zach says he'll expand his hours beyond the 6:30 p.m. closing time and eventually open on weekends. But while a cold brew might help these burgers go down even easier, Winghart's is a already a winner.

The Center of Growth Starts at the Square

Okay, you know you're doing something right when nearly 300 people fill up the grand ballroom of the Wyndham Grand Hotel before the clock strikes 8 on a Tuesday morning — especially after another winter storm dumped a new coat of snow on the roads and drop kicked the mercury to near zero. Maybe it was the free Dozen cupcake awaiting everyone in the room. But we know that those early birds got a jump on the day's events to find out the big buzz at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's 2011 Annual Meeting.

Now you might be asking yourself this question about now...How does the PDP's yearly get together have anything to do with Market Square? Well, we're glad you asked. Because we happen to think that the Square is at the heart of Downtown's Center of Growth, which happened to be the theme of this year's get together. And while there's plenty of new growth all around Downtown, some of the most exciting projects just happen to be in or very near the Square.

Of course, the biggest happening in that area was the reopening of the Square this past spring. Counting everything from the weekly Farmers Market to the two-day 50th Anniversary Light Up Night megawatt bash, the Square hosted nearly 100 parties, rallies, weddings and other happenings. And with a revitalized Square at its core, new businesses branched out in all directions. From the lux trappings of the Fairmont Hotel to the hip Tavern 245 on Fourth Avenue, that growth is spreading out everywhere.

Hey, we'll be the first to admit that 2010 was a great year for the Square and, in general, just about everywhere Downtown. But we think 2011 and beyond will be even better. One reason is the fantastic members of the PDP, who work hard to attract new businesses, residents and visitors to what we think is the city's top neighborhood. And if you checked out the local daily newspapers recently you probably spotted the story about a new project that will add another highlight to the city's already picture perfect skyline. Set to start construction in 2012, Millcraft Industries will build a 15-story hotel/office complex on Forbes Avenue between Wood Street and the Square. And in case Millcraft sounds familiar, they're the creative folks behind the Piatt Place condos at Wood and Fifth Avenue and Market Square Place between Fifth Ave and Market Square. So you could say things are already looking up.

In the more immediate future, you just might say that the days ahead will be a lot brighter. That's because artist Carin Mincemoyer will add a little bling to the Square when she installs her specially commissioned "Diamond, Diamonds" project will adorn two lamp posts on Market Street with 80 illuminated Plexiglas "diamonds" to commemorate the Square's past, when it was known as the Diamond.

And in one of his last official capacities as the head honcho of the PDP, CEO Mike Edwards announced 2011's new five-year plan that will guide us toward a more vibrant, prosperous and cleaner Downtown for merchants, residents and visitors. We'll also be building baseline data from the past five years so that at next year's Annual Meeting we can distribute the first volume of our "State of the Downtown" Report. This annually updated report will track facts and figures that will help potential developers, retailers, and residents get a picture of our Downtown, its strengths, its trends and its opportunities. Even better, Mike, who's returning to Washington state to work with the city of Spokane, reported that PDP stakeholders gave us a B+ over the last five years for cleaning up the city's image and streets, a big jump from the previous C+ in 2006. Hey, we're working our way to the head of the class and won't be happy until we earn straight A's.

Well, we all know the future looks bright for Pittsburgh and Downtown — despite the Super Bowl! So, in the days ahead look for more Paris to Pittsburgh renovations, more new dining spots in Market Square and all over Downtown.

We Are The High Five Champions!

We're number one! We're number one! We're number one! We really, really are...at least when it comes to raising our hands way up high. That's right, in the winner take all battle between Pittsburgh and Green Bay football fans, the Steel City grabbed the glory during this week's "Go Pittsburgh" High Five Challenge in Market Square, sponsored by the good folks at DIGIORNO Pizza. That's the "It's not takeout. It's DIGIORNO" line of supermarket pies that taste just like the ones you get from your your favorite pizza parlor.

Anyway, nearly 1,300 gridiron and pizza fans crowded the Square during lunchtime to show their true colors — and we don't have to mention what those are — and to try to make the Guinness World Record for the most high fives in one place at one time. Well, we came up a little short in the record book but the attempt was still a winner as DIGIORNO is donating a minimum of $12,500 to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. If you can't give yourself a high five, a pat on the back is okay, too.

And let's not forget Casandra Kelly of Greentree. Lucky Cass will be hosting one big party today with the $500 American Express gift certificate she won in a drawing. Hey, Cas, we're checking our calendar and, hmmmm, wouldn't you know, we don't have anything scheduled...yet. So if your super party guest list is coming up a little short, you know where to find us. Anyway, Cas couldn't have been happier to win the top prize, even if she did happen to be wearing a scarf from a local hockey team. Well, you know how Pittsburghers are. There just aren't enough teams for us to cheer for.

And wouldn't you know that every gray cloud in the sky vanished and the mid-winter rays bathed the Square with plenty of sunshine. Maybe that's the reason why Pittsburgh fans poured into the Square to toss footballs at targets, spin a wheel of chance and throw bean bags for great prizes that ranged from giant foam high-five hands to oven mits to mini footballs. Best of all, more true-blue die-hard fans from the City of Champions turned out than the folks did in Green Bay. 1,254 Pittsburghers to 705 Green Bay fans. Which means we snagged the "best fan" title in this contest by 549 people. As if the outcome was ever in doubt.

With one title already under our belts, who knows how many more we'll win tonight when Pittsburgh and Green Bay match up again. We don't have a Magic 8 Ball, but we do see the number 7 in our future. If you catch our drift...and we don't mean a Green Bay snow drift.

We like to think of ourselves as good sports. No matter what the game, it's how you play in the end that counts. And no one played the game better than all-time fan favorite and football great Jack Ham. A longtime local hero, Jack was on hand before the rally started and after it ended to greet fans, sign autographs and cheer on the hometown crowd to victory. Now that's a hall of fame performance.

So, now that we own high-five bragging rights, let's starting thinking about the next title and hope that everything comes up lucky sevens. And, of course, here's a really big high five to DIGIORNO for hosting the best-ever pizza party in Market Square.

High Fives and Super Sevens

And if breaking world records isn't enough, fans in both cities will have even more reasons to celebrate during the High Five rallies. The Market Square State of Business Address

Sometimes it seems like every time you walked across Market Square during 2010 there was a special event going on there. Whether it was the two-day 50th Anniversary Light Up Night extravaganza or a quiet summertime wedding, there was hardly any downtime in the Square last year. So while we recapped the Best Events of 2010 in a recent post, it's time to take a look a some equally big goings-on in the Square that were sometimes just out of the spotlight. Now it's their time to shine.

Open for business: Nearly a dozen businesses opened in or relocated to the Square or the streets nearby. In the heart of the Square, the new shops include the trendy WEAR fashions, the relaxing zen of Zhang's Massage and a fresh nest for the legal eagles of Sommer Law Group, perched above Starbucks. Of course, Chipotle added a bit of spice to the Square's dining menu with it's freshly prepared gourmet wraps, salsa and other tasty South of the Border treats.

Now, we like to think of Market Square as a state of mind, especially when it comes to the cool new enterprises operating in the vicinity. If you're in the mood for a new "look," we recommend that you stop in 3 Guys Optical along Fifth Avenue, in the beautifully restored Buhl Building. These visionary eye wear experts will fit you with a new set of specs to guarantee that you look your best. Speaking of the Buhl Building, the main tenant there is PMI, a multimedia production company that does amazingly cool work. Chances are that you've seen PMI prez David Case walking around Downtown with Pittsburgh's most photographed pooch, Willie. And on the Market Street corner of the Buhl you'll find Splash, the city's kitchen, bath and home decorating experts. Always a Downtown landmark, the Buhl is bouncing back to life as hip hub for energetic entrepreneurs.

Just a few step away from the Buhl Downtown residents, shoppers and employees stop by the new PNC Y to work off a few of those extra pounds we all seemed to put on during the holidays. And if you need a break from our little winter wonderland here, the vacation planning experts at Liberty Travel can put together a R&R getaway to a warm-weather destination of your desire.

Speaking of PNC, just across the street you'll find the newest branch office of the city's biggest bank, located on the ground level of Three PNC Plaza. The bartenders here provide an artful touch to the classy cocktails they mix every day of the week and their new happy hour specials prove there is something for everyone "where art and industry meet."

And let's not forget that Market Square is the fastest growing neighborhood within Downtown — the city's newest neighborhood. Along with the apartments at MarketSquare Place and the Residences at Fifth and Market, the posh penthouse pads in Three PNC Plaza provide a bird's eye view on the Square and just about everywhere else Downtown. Market Square Place and Three PNC both saw their first tentants move in during 2010.

All these businesses are such great additions to the area its hard to remember that just one year ago the doors they didn't exist. The Best of 2010 in Market Square

Since the first week of 2011 is in the history books, let's take a look back at the Best of Market Square in 2010. While our list of top events certainly puts the reopening of the Square in the Number One spot, the rest of the best don't fall into any particular order — except for making 2010 one of the best years ever for the Square. Okay, here we go.

The Square Reopens: Sure, it seemed like a long time. But when the Mayor and enough other dignitaries to fill up Times Square cut the ribbon to officially reopen it, it was well worth the wait.

Here Comes the Bride: We broke out the super-sized box of tissues when Andrea Gault and Koy Lopez tied the knot in the Square this past August. The bride and groom traded "I do's" under picture-perfect summer skies in biggest open-air chapel in town.

Zombie-palooza: No, it wasn't a remake of "Night of the Living Dead," but more than 4,000 happily "undead" filled the Square in their most gruesome Sunday best for Zombie Fest.

Down on the Farm: After being transplanted to Gateway Center during construction, the Farmers Market returned to the Square in 2010 with the freshest, home-grown produce around, plus lots of other goodies from pastries to local wines.

Holiday Highlights: Every night during the 2011 year-end holidays was a little brighter in the Square as the inaugural Season of Lights display twinkled and blinked away. Designed by Blachere Illuminations and generously sponsored by the Colcom Foundation, more than 150,000 LEDs adorned buildings, lamp posts and the centerpiece 33-feet tall sphere tree. This instant favorite de-"lighted" holiday revelers all season long.

A Real Bumper Crop: Before they raced ’round the Oval in Schenley, the Vintage Grand Prix roadsters made a pit stop in the Square to impress antique auto lovers with their classy chassis.

Totally Toyota: Fresh from the fields, the Toyota Farm to Table Tour rolled into the Square to showcase the abundance found close to Pittsburgh with eight local celebrity chefs who whipped up al fresco Square meals using ingredients supplied by our very own Farmers Market.

Pens Central: Hundreds of Penguins fans flocked to the Square for to cheer on the Sid, Marc and all their favorite hockey heroes for the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. Though the Pens got the short end of the hockey stick in the game, the rally was a winner.

Golden Opportunity: A Pittsburgh tradition for a half century, the Square was at the heart of the 2010 50th Anniversary of Light Up Night, a special two-day celebration that featured food, fireworks, marching bands, a horse-drawn carriage parade, the second wedding of the year and much merrymaking to usher in the holiday season.

Rock the Block: Downtown residents from all over congregated in the Square for the 2010 Neighborhood Block Party in the Square. Under the clear skies of a soft fall evening, 1,500 neighbors chatted as they tasted and sipped the best dishes of eateries in the Square.

Happy Holidays n'at, yunz guys: It was jingle bells all the way around the Square as Joe Gruschecky, Donnie Iris, Rick Witkowski and other local rockers made merry during the WDVE Holiday Party. With morning show hosts Jim Krenn and Randy Baumann hosting the bash, Pittsburghers caught the spirit of the season with a dose of holiday tunes played rock ’n’ roll style.

No matter the weather, it was a great day for hockey fans in Market Square. Because that's where hundreds of Pens supporters flocked at noon today to cheer on Sid the Kid and the rest of the lads before they take on the Wash Caps in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field on New Year's Day. With longtime play-by-play announcer Mike Lange handling MC duties, with help from broadcast buddy Phil Bourque and WDVE's Val Porter, this pep rally was more fun than a playoff series sweep against the Philly Flyers.

Of course, showing your support for the Pens before the big game was reason enough to be in the Square. But one lucky fan took home a pair of tickets to the game during a text message contest. Sometimes it pays to be all thumbs, especially when you get to pocket the hottest tix in town for the coolest winter event in the ’Burgh.

And there were more prize giveaways than slapshots in an OT shootout. For winter sports enthusiasts, the free lift tickets will keep some lucky downhill types schussing along the sweetest slopes around — or sipping hot chocolate in the lodge — all day long. And the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious passes to the opening night performance of Disney's "Mary Poppins" at the Benedum went down easier than spoonful of sugar.

Now, if you didn't score tix for the Pens/Caps faceoff, we hope you got your hands on the First Night admission buttons that the friendly folks from the Cultural Trust. These festive fashion accessories are your ticket to enjoy many of the amazing performances that will push 2010 into the history books and usher in 2011 with a big bang of two separate fireworks displays. Even if you managed to skate a few laps around the rink outside Heinz Field, some lucky fans got free passes to show their ice skills at the county's rinks in North and South Parks. And so many people went home with a Great Race Gift Bags, filled with goodies like a Dick's Sporting gift card, that we lost count.

It's not really a party in the Square until the band plays. And there was music galore on stage with local legends Jimmy Adler and Norm Nardini, who's going to open for New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi at the Consol Energy Center in February. Budding musicians also strutted their stuff, too, as the Riverview marching band entertained and cheerleaders from Brashear, Gateway and Riverview high schools pumped up the crowd noise and enthusiasm.

For an event this big, more than a few dignitaries were on hand, including chief county exec Dan Onorato and Pens mascot Iceburgh. But the biggest VIPs were all the generous people who donated canned goods and money to help keep the the shelves full at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. That's the real spirit of the holiday season.

Ring In The New Year In The Square

Now we know that there's going to be plenty of action all over Downtown this New Year's Eve during the First Night festivities. But we'll be singing a few verses of "Auld Lang Syne" in the middle of Market Square as we count down the final seconds of 2010. After all, we certainly don't want to forget that this was one great year for the "new" Square.

Okay, so while you're out and about around town with friends and family, why not use the Square as a meeting place throughout the evening? The eateries around the Square are great spots to refuel with a beverage or two and consume some tasty calories to keep your engines running in high gear all night long. If you're looking for more than a quick bite, a little birdie told us that Bella Sera Urban Trattoria has a couple tables left for their special New Year's Eve seatings.

And while there will be plenty of sky-high pyrotechnic displays as fireworks brighten the night to start and end the New Year's festivities, the brilliant Market Square Season of Lights, made possible by Colcom Foundation, will light the final hours of 2010 in Market Square.

So as we get ready to close the book on 2010, the past 365 days have been great ones in the Square — from the revolution in the way it looks and feels, to the return of the Farmers Market, to Zombies, a summer wedding and the spectacular two-day 50th anniversary celebration of Light Up Night. With plenty of old acquaintances to remember from the year that's almost history, we look forward to making many new friends and creating more exciting reasons to enjoy the Square in 2011.

The Weather Outside Is Frightful, But The Band Is Soooo Delightful!

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And he just happened to make an early stop Downtown for the first-ever WDVE Holiday Party in Market Square this past Thursday night. Just for this momentous occasion, Jolly Old St. Nick traded in his traditional red and white garb for more appropriate Black and Gold threads to rock the night away with local music legends like head Houserocker Joe Grushecky and Donnie Iris, the coolest king of rock of all.

With morning show hosts Jim Krenn and Randy Baumann chilling at the mic as the evening's MCs, the crowd warmed up as the musicians made merry on stage with their special twists on classic holiday tunes. While we didn't spot Rudolph in the skies above, thousands of fans with rosy red noses and cheeks in the streets filled the Square with holiday spirit to spare.

Of course, many of the pre-holiday revelers sought a bit or warmth in the watering holes around the Square. But all through this tune-filled night, no one was ready to turn in for a long winter's nap. This is one party that rocked from start to finish.

Seriously, it's not even officially winter. But this deep freeze certainly is putting the "BRRR" in "the ’Burgh." So that's why we're inviting you to drop by Market Square, where things are always heating up with some of the hottest events in town.

For instance, this Thursday evening the madcap comic geniuses of the WDVE Morning Show — Jim Krenn and Randy Baumann and assorted sidekicks — take to the Stage in the Square to host the station's annual Holiday Party that is guaranteed to rock the block with some of the town's favorite music legends like King Cool Donnie Iris, who partied on the Clemente Bridge during Light Up Night, and one of Bruce Springsteen's best friends Joe Grushecky of the Iron City Houserockers.

Now one of the coolest events to lace up skates in these parts is the New Year's Day NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic. Of course the Pens and Caps won't be bangin' the boards in the Square. But Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh and our pals at ’DVE will be hosting a huge pep rally in the Square very soon.
